When Did Tacomas Become So Expensive?

I have been noticing that 1st gen Tacoma's have become outrageously expensive these days. In 05 I bought a 99 extra cab, 47k with every option and a supercharger and trd exhaust for $14k, but now that same truck with 140k would cost just about the same. I don't know if it is just the Bay Area, but people are asking outrageous prices for 98's & 99's with higher mileage. My friend bought an 01 5 speed, TRD, extended cab with 177k for $8700. That is $200 more than my 00 limited 4runner with every option and it has 100k on it. Just wanted to see if the pricing is the same around the country or if anyone has noticed this as well.

The rust thing amd a bunch getting bought back made 1st gen taco's more "rare" and its a small toyota pickup truck, so the demand will always be high, plus the newer taco's are too big so the old one is what everyone wants...

The prices are high up here too. I posted my '01 Taco (xtra cab,, 4wd, V6, 5spd w/ 79k) for 14k thinking I would get around 12 for it. It sold in two days for the full asking price. I couldn't believe it.

Same here. One of the major reasons I ended up with a 4Runner. Tacomas are outrageously expensive here. I'm glad I gave the Runner a chance because I like it more than any truck I've ever had.

Tacomas have always held their value well, much better than 4Runners (at least as far as the 95-04 Tacomas vs 96-02 4Runners are concerned). I bought my '01 Tacoma DC (4dr) w/ TRD pkg w/ 105K in April 2008 for $9500 and sold it in April 2011 w/ 143K for $9400! I definitely think geography and supply & demand play a big role...

It was the rusty frame buy back from Toyota that make them so expensive.

Toyota bought back about 900,000 Tacomas, 1995.5 thru 2000 were bought back and crushed. 2001-2004 Tacomas had new frames put under them.

Paid $7000.00 for my 2000 Taco, and got back $12,875 on a buyback.

The 2nd gen Taco's are nice, but a lot of guys like the 1st gen better still. In a lot of ways I agree with them, they're more the pure Toyota that most of us fell in love with, and the 2nd gen seemed to lose some of it's magic. Good trucks still (I have an 05 2nd gen) but just doesn't feel the same in a lot of ways.

The buy-back could have made a difference too by limiting the available supply, I bought a 98 in July 07 for $7500 (SR5 V6 Xtracab 5spd-plain jane) and it got bought back in May 08 $20,805. Things like that definately kept their customer base even if they make a mistake (which wasn't Toyota's fault at the end). That buy-back bought me my 04 T4R. Thanks Toyota!

FYI-1st gens are still crazy expensive here too.

See right there. My Tacoma sold for the same amount 6 years ago and it had a supercharger and exhaust. I want to get another Tacoma at some point, but not at these prices. I definitely understand the desire for them, but it is crazy. Should have invested in Tacomas years ago. :bash:

The 1st gen Tacos are crazy expensive here in Hawaii too. I was looking around for a good deal for one to be a DD last summer but hell, for about $10-12k more I could just get a new 2nd gen, which is what I did. Well, I guess Hawaii's love for Tacomas and Toyotas in general don't help much to find a cheap truck.
