I think when people start looking for 2.7 to put 3.4's in them we know for sure that we are running out of 3rd Gens.:jaw:

I love the S Series Saturns as beater cars. I worry the day I need another and I can’t find a decent one and am required to figure out what to replace it with. It gets me 40mpg in the winter and 44 or more in the summer.

I can't imagine how lackluster power is in those things.

You never hear the 3RZ guys bemoaning lack of power. You only ever hear 5VZ guys saying "I'm just glad my truck isn't THAT slow!"

So if that makes you feel better, you're welcome :hippie:

All I ever say is how much of a dog the 5vz-fe is. If I had a garage and the space I'd be prepping my 2uz-fe swap. I'm sure the vehicle drives fine at sea level but in the mountains ... yikes.

as someone who owns a Jaguar aj8 375 hp and daily my 5vz and being 51 years old all I can say is...

why are you all in such a god dam hurry.

So my last daily driver was a 383hp LX570 and I don't really miss the power at all. I go from 0-30, 0-40, 0-15mph to work and back every day in this dang traffic in Atlanta. Having owned a 1985 4runner 22r-e with 33's and an automatic will give you a lot of perspective though!

True enough. I daily'ed a 22RE for years. Everything else is a sports car.

I'll take take the reliability of the 5vz-fe over the 1GR-FE 4.0 I did a head gasket job on my daughters 2004 what a pain in the Bu##. For me it was not worth difference in HP. Do I wish that the 2UZ FE was an easy swap hell yea but I can see a point in the near future where people will be buying up the 3rd gen with a 4 cylinder and doing the easy swap of a 3.4.:fish2:

The 3RZ is a great motor... If it is paired with the W59. It doesn't match well with the auto transmission even in the lighter tacomas. The 3RZ likes to rev and the auto transmission likes to bog, poor match. What will happen in the future is the easy 4runners will get sucked up and what will be left is the high milage/ frame/ engine/transmission problems. There will be plenty of parts for those for quite a while

I have never wished for the v6. Every time I do some work under the hood I say "man, I love this engine!" I'll give you a race swapping valve cover gaskets!

I used to think the same, but I've been pleasantly surprised with my 3RZ Auto 4x4. Put a couple thousand miles on it including some time at 75 on the freeway, you're not going to be passing anyone sure, but it's perfectly liveable, the factory 4.56s make it very comparable to a V6 auto truck as far as acceleration goes.

You also get the added benefit of having a damn near indestructible trans at the power level, the automatic is identical to the V6's, but the W59 is super wimpy compared to the R150. Sure I was hard on em, but I blew up 2 of them and clutches to go with in a pretty short period of time, I don't think I could blow up my auto if I tried.

The later 1GR's have been great. 03-04 had those headgasket issues. My parents both drive 1GR auto powered trucks, an 05 with 250k and an 07 with 210k respectively with zero issues, not even so much as an oil leak.

Because i'm not dead?

In all seriousness if you think a 3rd gen 4runner isn't awful to drive in the mountains you're probably being towed by a different vehicle. They are flat out awful at altitude.

Does altitude play a big role? What is the air pressure affecting?

it was in jest of course but... the older I get the more I look around and enjoy the trip.

having driven I70 from Denver to Vegas in both the AJ8 and the 5VZ I understand. The 5VZ is like... hmm wonder if I'm moving or not? the AJ8 just goes. once your up over loveland pass that stretch of I70 is some of the coolest road to drive. as long as it's not Sunday afternoon and your coming back into Denver.
