When you use a locker you ask...simply put, when you're off road. This will help you move about the terrain w/o getting stuck. Then when you're done, turn it off.

You're lucky you got a 4R w/ a factory locker. These models can be tough to come by.

Hope you wheel it...a lot that is!

does the button say RR DIFF LOCK on it? if not, if its just a pic of a truck chassis with an x in the middle, its the ctr locker, which is what i suspect you have.

Why would u suspect i dont' have the locker? i have the button that says RR Diff lock to the left of the steering wheel. My 2000 has the locker, my dads 1999 Limited 4runner had the locker, and so did his 1997 4runner. I think they are alot easier to come by up here in Canada. to tell you the truth, every 4runner i've been in has the rear diff lock, including 4 of my parents friends and my friends tacoma. must be alot more common around here.

gotcha, sorry, most 2000 limiteds had the awd system with the ctr diff lock thats all.

I always hear that they are hard to comeby. Are they only on some 4runners that are 4wd or all of them? Mine has it. I know a person with a 99 2wd and he doesnt have a locker. But whats the deal on it?

no problem! sorry if i sounded rude. didnt' mean to. i know the RR diff lock has gotten my dad out of some situations...such as driving on the highway and getting stuck in a horrible snow storm...so bad that he had to stop, but if he stayed stopped for only a few minutes he would be practically buried. he said the locker saved him a few times. i was just curious to know if you guys used it before you were stuck, or after to get you out of being stuck.

I generally drive as far as I can just in 4lo with the locker off but for hills and stuff that I can tell will be tough then I throw the locker on.
Driving with it on all the time in situations that are definetly overkill just puts more strain on associated parts thus I only use it when needed.

For off-roading, i use my rear locker often. I lock the rear whenever the terrain turns tough. I lock BEFORE heading into tough terrain. When in doubt, LOCK.:)

sadly my limited has a locker and I've never taken it off road.

someday, when time permits...just too busy lately. I need to find some damned trails in Pennsylvania.

You need to exercise it to keep it well lubricated and in working order.
