I have a 06 4runner V8 limited and find the rotors require resurfacing before 30K. This is amazing to me. I still have pads left, but too much vibration in the peddle. So the rotors have to be replaced or surfaced.

Where do you stand?

Too many variables with regard to brake wear to make a poll that works as a reference.

Everybody brakes differently since everybody drives differently and 30k is a bit out of the norm but not uncommon.
 
Good poll.

IIRC, fronts were at ~125,000 Km (~77,000 mi.)
Getting set to do the rear at ~146,000 Km (~90,000 mi) or more.

edit: Regular DD city/highway split using OEM Toy parts.

72,500 miles and still have the original brakes and rotors. Ill prob. have the shop look at them when I get my tires rotated this month.
 
Brakes don't wear like say,timing belts,water pumps and the such since they aren't as affected by a person's driving style. I drive hard and brake hard and could go through front brakes in in under 40,000 miles which I am at the moment and it might be good for people to post their driving style too. A clutch would fall into the same category as brakes.

Also brand and whether brakes pads are made of organic or ceramic material make a diff.

Rear brakes I do see in the 60k range.

I'm just saying we need more info about each member's driving and type of brakes since the results would very quite a bit and it would be nice to have more info to compare to what each person may have.

More info would be helpful to make the poll less generic.

Post Year, Model & driving type/activities. EG Towing, racing...

And any exceptional issues or other...

Figures...I post this and on the way home from work yesterday I noticed my brakes were squeaking a bit. Oh well, I guess they are about due.

I replaced the front brakes and had the rotors turned on my previous truck (2006 4runner) at 32k.

My truck is my daily driver where most of my driving is stop and go on back roads with hills and such going back and forth to work, etc... We'll see how long the front brakes last on my 2008 4Runner, but I'm hoping they last longer than 32k.

frozen calipers at 62k

i drive easy on and offroad, tho my brakes have seen quite a bit of underwater time which could have contributed (i bet) to the early death o the calipers.

I agree, depends on the use. I think ATRAC eats lots of brakes.
For instance, I have Sport (better brakes) and I drive regular. Off road only on my driveway after heavy snowfall. I have 80K miles and my brakes shows 40% wear of factory on 2004. I think if u have problems with brakes so early, it is an indicator of abuse.

I had to do the rears at around 75K because I had a strange squeek coming from the truck that I couldn't figure out that went away when I did the rear brakes. They actually still had plenty of pad left.

I just did the fronts a few weekends ago because the pedal started feeling soft at 98K. There was no pulsation at all in the pedal so I just roughed up the stock rotors with emory paper and slapped on the new pads. After a short wear in period the brakes are working great.

I couldn't believe how long they lasted. Not to mention I've been pulling a 4500lb boat with it too for the last 15k about every other weekend.
 
Just had my fronts done at 76k. Pads and resurfaced rotors.

I was really surprised at how long these lasted.

There was also a squeal coming from the brakes for about the past 50k miles, which drove me nuts. Actually, nutser. I thought it was from the rear, so I coated the pads with non-squeal lubricant, and that had no affect. Since the squeal was coming from the front. Duh.

But the new brakes in the front have solved the squealing problem, thankfully.

I had the work done at the dealer, and though it took forever and a day for the job to get done, they seem to have done a good job.

Except for one thing... the pads. In 76k miles, I never got one flake of brake dust with the OEMs. Now I'm getting dust like Kansas. What the heck kind of pads did the dealer use, anyway? No, I didn't ask them....
 
i have noticed vibration in my pedal. does that mean i have to have my rotors resurfaced? what is the typical cost involved? i need to replace my brake pads soon too. can old brake pads cause vibration too? how do i know if i need rotors resurfaced? any info would help

Yes, the rotors will need resurfacing. It's pretty cheap, $20/wheel (that's a guess). Sometimes old pads will cause a vibration at very low speeds but really don't cause the pulsing type vibration during normal stopping that bothers most folks.

Once the rotors are turned they will probably warp again. If you made it 50k the first time you'll get maybe 30k before they warp again. Should you need rotors super cheap rotors are tempting but Napa Gold or other premium OE style rotor is worth the money. That's my 2cents...

thanks for the info! i need to replace my pads... do you think i should replace the pads first and see if that solves the problem or just resurface them while i have everything apart?

can you visually tell if they need resurfaced or only by the vibrations?
 
So.....i was looking at my account on toyotaownersonline.com and the toyota dealer finally uploaded my service records on my rig before i purchased it....


it showed that my rotors were machined at 53,000 right before I bought it.

i just hit 85,000 miles....

My question is how many times can you have the rotors resurfaced??
 
I tow a 17ft boat and a 10x6 utility trailer often plus a mix city street and highway. 65000 on original brakes thinking of doing them in fall should i get crossed drilled and slotted rotors?what about ceramic pads?
