When i rev it to red line, it always shuts off and then i have to wait like 30 seconds or so for the computer to reset. wondering if anyone else has the same problem and if there is a solution.
When I rev to redline the car shuts off. Help!

If i rev the car to redline, the engine shuts off, and i have to wait 30 seconds or so for the computer to reset. Im wondering if this is a safety feature or if I have a problem with something.

Pour sand in the gas tank. You'll pollute less and accomplish your goal quicker.:bash:
Okay, gotta ask-- why would you rev it to redline in the first place? I've never even tried that with my 4Runner.

I don't think I've ever hit the rev limiter in the runner.... I get worried when I go up to 4k driving hard on the road.

Took my dads 2000 for a run to blow it out and wake it up. It did this when i pinned it. I threw it in neutral and restarted it. Came home told him to change the spark plugs and bam it's healty and can take the upper rpm's. 240K miles btw. Got to let it sing every now and then.

Glad your not my kid haha. Pinning an engine (especially one that's not fine tuned for performance) is asking to throw a rod.
Nothing wrong with getting it up into the high 4s/low 5s for a few seconds now and then while driving, but don't hold it there and never do that in neutral.

Never let it sit on the rev limiter always let out. These engine are tuned from factory to able to handle the the revolution they go up to. That's why they put governor and rev limiters on them to protect the vehicle. A completely stock engine will be fine going up high in the rpm's every now and then.
Never done in neutral just open up from 0-70 to give it a good blow out. Only dropped it in neutral to restart it after it shut down. Even when it gets sea foam I'll only let it sit at 4k rpm for brief moment.

It's interesting to know what happens when you hit the rev limiter (by accident or otherwise) just like it's interesting to know what happens when you accidentally pop the transmission into reverse when going 70.
I always thought hitting the rev limiter just makes the engine sputter, not shut off altogether for 30 seconds or so, just like I thought dropping the tranny into reverse would blow it up.
Always good to know what happens by other people's experiences....

I've never hit the rev limiter in my 4Runner but I know the result isn't the engine shutting off. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Think about it. 19 year old takes his Dad's 4Runner out to state 101, pegs it, engine cuts out on a curve, dumbass hits a bridge embankment doing 100 because the power steering/brakes shut off with no motor. Sorry, no manufacturer is that stupid.
Every rev limiter I've ever heard of, and I've been around bikes and cars a long time, either cuts out the ignition (sounds like the engine is misfiring) or cuts the fuel pressure (on fuel injected vehicles).
Either method the engine stays running. :wtf:

I'm thinking he's got it in Park or Neutral. Maybe the ECM is smart enough to realize this and just kill it altogether.
