When Price Of Gas reach What?...... then you'll let the 4runner Go,....I say $7.00

Luckily I am retired so I do not have to drive much but we like long driving vacations. You should see those crazy Californians coming to Lake Havasu City Arizona with their monster boats with 2 big blocks or supercharged engines filling those big gas tanks. They do not really seem to care at all. That on top of their fancy custom pickup trucks and motor homes. They make me feel like a poor man.

The problem this time gents, is that the current administration has stopped drilling in the gulf. Less American oil means more OPEC oil which means high prices could last a while. It would take the threat of total economic collapse for the current administration to open up drilling. We have problems. I do agree with the fellas that think its smarter to hold on, stealerships will not be apt to give you a deal on your trade if its a gas guzzler.

Yup, luckily for me, i sold my G when gas prices were going down...so, i got book value for my G...and got my Prius at invoice.

I no longer have my 4Runner (turned it in when the lease ran out), but do have a "gas guzzler" 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. On a bad day, it gets 14 mpg and on a good day, perhaps 18 or even 19 on the highway. I'll keep it a long, long time and it will be paid for by this upcoming fall.

My "economy car" is a 2002 Nissan Sentra - 30+ mpg - that has been paid off since 2004; and now will be with me for a long, long time. I enjoy the V8 truck more than the Sentra, but have been driving it less and less with fuel costing more. I am on vacation right now and had to take the truck because we needed the space, but the Silverado will go into dry dock for awhile when I get home.

Fuel is cheap here in SC (<$3.60 per gallon) and a little worse in VA (~$3.79 per gallon); but I know it has crossed the $4 mark in other parts of the country. I see things getting worse before they get better; with the onset of "summer blend" fuels, the peak vacation driving season and our government continuing to prohibit more domestic oil exploration. WTF??
:wtf:

I suppose the breaking point for most people will be $4.50 to $5.00 - no matter what kind of vehicle they drive. For the average "working man" out here, is it going to pay to spend $150 a week in gas for folks making just $700 or $800 a week? Tough times ahead; no doubt.

I drive big rigs at work, and they get about 6 miles per gallon (diesel, of course). With ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel - what "on road" diesel engines must use) going for close to four bucks a gallon, that is more than 65 cents a mile just to move the truck! That doesn't even include driver's pay, insurance, tax, tires, maintenance and the actual cost of the truck. Since nearly everything we buy arrives on a truck, train or ship (all of which use diesel fuel), look for the cost of consumer goods to go through the roof soon. Think of the meat, froze produce and dairy products at your supermarket; which all arrive on a refrigerated trailer powered by diesel fuel.

Additionally, our government is playing "fast and loose" with the US Dollar - mostly by 'printing more money' and thus devaluing the real purchasing power that you and I have. Unless we get some integrity and honesty in Washington (from the White House to the Capitol Building, etc., etc.) and put some people up there with gusto, this imbroglio will continue to worsen.

My 4Runner gets 20-22 mpg. I think that is pretty good for the family mobile. I have always had an econ beater car for a commuter and my Jeep Wrangler for wheeling. Depending on how much you drive it could be worth getting a beater that gets good mpg and keep your 4Runner.

In the past I have had a couple old Mercedes diesels and currently a Chevy Cobalt.

well being 18 and just starting out by myself in the world, gas prices have really affected me, rent, insurance, food, and GAS.

the american public IMO wont put up with gas prices higher than 5 bucks, as many of you guys have stated.

but instead of making this into a political thread, all i have to say is that im not going to sell my runner. i love her to much.

BUT i also love my motorcycle, and she isnt a very heavy drinker compared my big girl.

the price of gas is directly proportional to the drop in the dollars value. Every time the dollar drops the price of gas goes up.

Gas prices might come down again just as it did a couple years ago when people dumped off their gas guzzlers.

$6 for the summer driving season.

I won't be getting rid of mine even if the prices were that high. You make it sound like the 4Runner gets such horrible gas mileage. Try driving a full size pickup for a week instead. If your 4Runner is stock, it is a lot worse.

Currently I'm driving less for other reasons. When I do, I shut off the truck and don't let it sit there running. Stuff like that is about all I can do. That or I'll get in the other car and lug gears in nice weather.

A proper full size truck will do 18-22mpg. For the size of the 4runner, it gets bad MPG.

my 4runner is not going anywhere. it will be with me even with $20 a gallon.

i thought about getting a vespa as a second option.
about $3,000 and an extra $60 in insurance a month.

could pay off in the long run. but i drive way too much for work (anywhere from 10 miles a day to 300 miles a day) and vespas dont last very long when in high mileage. ive put 40,000 miles on my runner in a year.

and i also can not imagine driving anything other than the 4runner. it just feels so right when sitting behind that toyota emblem... getting to admire the runner as i walk up to it. everyday is like watching an angel grow. i love it too much.

I don't really single out 4Runners with bad mileage, Xterra and Pathfinder can get worse mpg. But 4Runner is what I own.

[Fri-Sun(Easter), the cheapest I got while in Socal-LA area was $4.29 per gal. My computed mileage was 16.4 mpg]

Im 19 years old. I moved out at 18, bought a Chevy Tahoe for my first vehicle. Awful on gas, loved it though. After two years ownership i bought a 1998 Prizm to save on gas. I paid $500 for it, drove it for 40k. Then sold it. Now i finally bought my dream vehicle, my 4R.

I can vouch for the younger guys when i say, the gas prices are tough. Especially when you pay for your rent, food, gas, heat, electric, water, etc, etc all by your lonesome like myself, BUT i will say if there is one thing i learned from having bought all those vehicles in such a short period of time is that i ended up wasting more money after buying the cars, doing the needed maint on them at that immediate time, paying sales tax, paying my insurance off, and then most of the time with my luck i would get hit with both my excise tax for my old and new vehicles at the same time.

I would say this, if you are required to make a large commute to work and your gas spending to income ratio is way off. Then maybe look into buying a used vehicle as a commuter. Never buy new in my opinion(Atleast not for us younger under established guys), i have seen way to many of my friends just tank themselves in debt over their ears and not a chance in sight of moving out and starting there own life.

Personally i set aside money into a separate account every PD for every single bill i have. We all know how much we spend on the average for gas a month, so take that number and add another $50 a month to it.

Lets face it, yes the gas prices are ridiculous. *****in about is not going to do anything for us, but budgeting will. If everyone could manage to cut down some of that extra driving they do(because with our 4R'S every mile counts for sure lol) we would be that much better off.

I hate to see friends and even you guys here even consider ridding of your loved 4R's just because we as Americans cant get our heads on straight.

To close out my long drawn out letter here, No i will not sell my 4R not matter how much the prices rise. I will adjust my living to the prices. I refuse to let the government control yet another decision i make. We have our own damn lives! Time for the blockheads in Washington to butt out.

Ok lets face it..now it does not matter if you have V6 or V8. Its hard to get 20mpg in the 4Runner and the quality of gas contributes to its low mileage. I am not dreaming for a prius like mpg, but atleast for a daily driver, the mileage should pass 25 up. Time will come that renting a fuel efficient vehicle for daily commute is practical than putting $100 gas every other day in these vehicles. And we can rent truck and vans if we need it for special trips...or even offroad vehicles.

I know gas prices can go up and down, but these time its different, theres really chaos(war) in our suppliers.

Its $4.15 for regular here...so, should gas prices keep on increasing, and its $7.00, I will trade or sell mine :sobbing:
NEVER!!!! I was living in Cali hmmm LA two years ago when gas almost reached five dollars... Ouch ! But my wife and i took it like champ's.....I think it was like 100$ every week or under........ Now i reside in Colorado..... gas here is almost 4$ that is the highest i have ever seen it,but it is not that bad since we only drive a short ways to work ! I love my 4Runner too much to ever give it up !:happens:

I hear you. I recently traded in my 2007 Lincoln Navigator because I was worried that my truck would soon become worthless and nobody/no dealer would buy it from me. Not that I own a 4Runner I feel stupid for not buying one a long time ago. 4Runners will never be worthless even if the daily driver market turns it's back on them. There is a special following for these trucks, they are one of the ultimate toys, and in the 4x4 market 4Runners will always be at the top of the list. Don't worry about gas, worry about paying off your 4Runner. Trust me somebody will buy your 4Runner even if gas goes through the roof.

Agreed...... I would never think of selling mine..... 4Runner have tons of followers... Best truck if you ask me....4th Gen and below.... Not digging them cheaping out on the 5thGen:mad:

Lol agreed...... Every time i walk out and see it parked there it's like wow, this thing is beautiful and i cant believe i have one..........:thumb3:

A real proper truck has a Cummins, but bias aside its a Strokin F250+, Cummins Dodge 2500+, or a Duramax Chevy 2500. Doesnt get anymore full size than that.

But those are diesels, right?? Did i miss something here? You put a diesel into a 4runner and it will get high-20's, low-30's everyday! Check out what Mercedes ML diesel gets...and the 4runner should be around that.

Now, the gasoline version of those trucks gets SIGNIFICANTLY worst fuel economy than the 4runner. You need to compare a modern 4runner vs. a modern gasoline fullsize truck. Apple to apple.

Now, the fact that a gasoline 5th gen 4runner can come close to a "proper" diesel truck in fuel economy is pretty good in my book. :)
