where do they house the flasher relay units on a 2001? ive been searching everywhere online, and i cant seem to find it in my rig. if you have them pictures would greatly help. thanks everyone

I've replaced mine w/ an LED flasher unit to allow for proper function of LED turn signal lights I'll be adding in the coming weeks. It's a bit tricky to get too, but on 3rd Gen 4Runners, the flasher relay is on the junction block behind the fuse panel by the driver's left knee. Helps to remove the driver side kick panel and the bottom half of the dash below the steering wheel. Then unbolt the junction box and the flasher unit is on the back side of that.

thats exactly why i was looking for it. i bought a new flasher unit, but... go figure, its the wrong type. ugg this is getting frustrating :redbrick:

I got mine from superbrightleds.com. Click on the below link and then click "more info" under the "electronic LED flasher" section to see all that they offer:

I first purchased the one that was said to fit toyotas, but when I went to install it, it did not fit my 4Runner?? Go figure. I returned it and found the one that had the pins in the correct orientation. This is the one you need: Part# CF13GL-02 if you order from them. It's said to fit Gemeran/European only, but it actually fits toyota.
Two more points on this aftermarket flaser unit:
One, it's not as precise as the stock unit when it comes to making the "tick-tock" sound you hear when using your turn signals. Sometimes it will make one more "tock" noise after you have released your turn signal selector. If you learn how to time it just right when using your turn signal selector, you can avoid this extra click or two.
I've got it down to a science now on when to release the turn signal switch so the noise heard is perfectly in sync with the turn signal switch being released.
The only other complaint I have about this flasher unit is that some times when it rains, the flasher unit makes very fast audible clicks for up to 10 mins or more?? I have no idea how rain can cause this as no water is getting into the cab what so ever. It's very odd. But it only does it for a short while and my turn signals still operate properly during this constant ticking noise the flasher unit is creating. Again, it does not do it every time it rains, just now and then. I've had the unit installed for almost a year now and it's only made this fast audible clicking noise maybe 10 times or less (it also did this when I first installed it too). Now I just turn up the radio when ever it decides to do this

well i just went into autozone and ordered an electronic flasher. will be here in the morning. if not ill be placing and order for one of those.
not when you say it keeps ticking, do your turn signals flash as well during those 10 minute periods?

I was about to upgrade to LEDs for my turn signals in the next few weeks...anyway, so after seeing this thread i was unsure now...do the LED bulbs not flash correctly after putting them in?

You have to put a resistor inline with circuit to get it to function correct again.
It's because the LED's lower the overall # of Ohms in the circuit causing the flasher to "think" there is a light burned out.

even then it seems to be plagued with problems because of possible inconsistencies. from what i have learned you need to replace the flasher relay with a digital flasher relay. im not 100% sure how the traditional relays work, but from what believe its the current from the bulb moves a selector back and forth in the relay box, as to where the electronic is all diodes that transmit power to the bulbs. the l.e.d.s dont provide enough power to switch that selector back and fourth, but they dont need to be able to in the electronic unit
like i said, not 100% sure on that by any means

No, my actual turn signals do not flash during this period...just the flasher unit itself makes the ticking noise. Again, it happens very rarely, but it does happen.
I'm guessing it's the cheaper build quality of the flasher unit vs that of the oem one. Nonetheless, it does operate my front led turn signals correctly.
The shortcomings of the flasher unit are just a noosance and not any real problem. Let me know how it goes!

I'm def going that route as the oem flasher unit is a much better quality unit. Now just to tear into the dash and get that aftermarket flasher unit out...what a pain that is.
So what other nifty mods are you gonna find for me that will make my current mods that much better
. BTW, just ordered the parts the antenna mod.

hold up there cowboy. read it again. he thought that our rigs take jso flashers, so he ordered accordingly, only to find out that it takes an iso flasher. so his quick fix was to swap the wires around to run properly. probably what ill end up doing because i know it works, and i have some money to spend on v-leds because of some returns.
and i got the small antenna adapter and im running that right now, i just need the y adapter

well im waiting for some of my old bulbs to get back to v-leds so i can get the new flasher relay that the guy bought in his thread. ill jump the wires over like he did and hopefully it will work.

SB01, granted it's an old thread and half of the members are no longer on YT, but it's worth reading. Confirms that you can actually modify the flasher unit within to keep the fast blinking from happening. Read carefully though, as Post# 5 pertains to our vehicles:

do you still have your stock flasher unit sitting around? if so, any chance your willing to try this out before i order my new one? seems like it shouldnt be terribly hard to do.

now it is me that had not read enough. this is for an electronic flasher relay, not the stock apparently. so i still need a iso flasher. but im gonna try this trident one and modify it i guess

. Correct, this mod cannot be done to the stock unit (would be great if it could). Let me know if you end up doing it to the trident unit...and take photos too.
