Where to go in Big Bear?

I haven't been to big bear before and am planning on going up with 1 or 2 other vehicles this Friday. I am wondering where is a good place to camp that costs little to nothing as I do not want to pay much for a site. I have looked into the Yellow Posts but I don't know what to choose and where to go. I would like some easy to moderate trails near by since I will be with another stock 4runner. I would also like to do some shooting while I am there so if anyone knows where to go for that please let me know. :sniper:

A great base camp would be big pine flats campground. There's a lot of trails to choose from around there. Holcomb valley as well. It all depends of road closure. Check with the BB visitor center of current road closure. I think minimal closure if any. A great test is white mountain. Stock t4r can do it but may/will have some undercarriage damage. Jacoby canyon. That should get you started.

Search...Here ya go merry Christmas a map I made from one of our previous meet & runs.. if you tap on any of the icons or dropped pins on the map it will have extra detail info, description,contact info etc etc.

I also have a shooting area on the map as well ..hint it's in big pine flats area locate it by touching the correct red pin.

It's full of campgrounds and yellow post sites and all the easy trails in that area.

Very nice, where were you when I drove through there in June! Went up grapevine canyon in the dark and camped at the horse spring campground, whole thing all to ourselves, if you don't count the rabbits and one large rattlesnake. Good times.
 
Where are the easy peasy fire roads in Big Bear? Heading up with some friends and want to kill some time in the dirty snow, but not looking for any serious wheeling. Looks like Butler Peak Road up to the lookout is closed.

And what's a good psi to run in the snow, same as dirt? ~22?

just came back from holcomb valley and it was my first snow wheeling trip, so fun!! I thought it was pretty easy.

Kinda depends on the snow depth, what's underneath( mud or ice) and the size of tire. But generally speaking yes it's a good idea to lower pressure a little. Skinny tires will penetrate the snow making contact with the ground and a wider tire with lowered pressure will tend to float on top, not always what you want

spenny recommended burns canyon, but we ended up not going after all. after hearing people's accounts of getting to and from big bear during the holidays we decided against it. one friend said it took him 6 hours to get to huntington beach from BB. fuxk that!
 
Does anyone know of a long trail near Big Bear that has a start and finish worth doing that would take a day or more to complete that I can camp on?

The longest trail would be 3n16 holcomb valley road it's all easy fire road but not a multi day drive. But there's so many trails up there you can snake your way around and make it a two day trip forsure. Check out the map on the forest service website and look at the maze of trails up there

In fact if you search for last years june run you can copy the route we took the first day then just add on to that for the second, you would cover a lot of ground
