wheres my turbo?!

ok so ive bought an 1987 4 runner for a little over a grand, now that ive bought it and read more about these 4runners and realize that im supposed to have a 22rte motor but there is no turbo!

what i was wondering is what list of parts should i check to make sure this car has all its appropriate parts(eg, ecu, harness, etc..) the intake chamber even says "turbo efi" making me believe that they havent replaced all the necessary parts for it to run properly as a 22re. now i have no idea what the previous owner/mechanic has effed with on this truck except for the missing turbo and manifold.

im open to any suggestions to weither i shoud replace everything to complete a 22re or rebuild it to the 22rte motor that i should originally have.

from my understanding i was told the compression ratio is different from the 22re to 22rte cause the turbo, will it do any harm now that i could POSSIBLY be running a lower compression ratio and perhaps wrong ecu/harness

If for some odd reason the previous owner just removed your turbo and manifold and slapped on a 22re manifold, that thing would be a dog. Does it feel like you have comparable power to a 22RE?
There are a few scenarios that are likely. The one I am thinking of that is most likely is that you are now running a non RTE block but still have the intake from the turbo motor. I have seen a few like this and none seemed to physically suffer from it but had much lower self esteem after being neutered. One real quick and easy way to check this is look below the exhaust manifold, pretty much in between the motor mount there should be a boss as is common on all 85 and later blocks. If you have a smooth boss without studs/nuts and possibly a metal block off plate over it then you have a normally aspirated 22RE block. If you look down there and see what looks like a bent steel tube or studs/nuts/block off plate on the boss then you have a RTE block and unknown internals.
Your ECU will be easy to identify, remove your drivers side kick panel and it should be right below your fuse box and the sticker should say 22RT-E. I will make a note that I have an 86 turbo 4runner and my ECU is actually on the passenger side under the kick panel, not sure if this is normal though. If you are running a RTE ECU then I am sure you will have a hell of a time tuning it as the RTE used larger peak and hold injectors as oppoped to the RE's lower cc saturated injectors. The turbo motors have lower compression pistons as well as larger combustion chambers in the head to keep compression down. If you feel like checking that get a boroscope or remove the head and take a look.

Other than "turbo efi" on what I think you mean is the valve cover, what makes you think it's supposed to be a turbo??
 
He is talking about his upper plenum, 22RE has EFI engraved in the top and the turbo models have an aluminum plate that says "turbo EFI". My avatar is a picture of the top of my upper plenum.

Could be a Frankenstien motor but hard to tell at this point.

what makes me believe that i was supposed to have a 22rte is because my ecu says "22rte", speed contol on the other side says "22r-t" as well with the actuator in the engine bay "22rte". and my ect even says "22rte" infront of my gear selector. also i have a turbo guage in the stock gauge cluster that goes up and down like if had a turbo in it.
