Which 3rd generation would you recommend

I currently have a 1995 4runner V6 2wd. I really love the vehicle, but, after having gotten stuck a couple of times, I'm really wanting a 4wd. I was thinking 3rd generation because of the larger V6 engine. Also, what do you think of the 5 speed vs the automatic. The majority of my driving would be on the highway to get me to the mountains and into the woods for camping, hiking, kayaking, etc. Thanks very much for any suggestions.

If possible, then definitely get a 1999-2002 4runner. Most bugs and recalls have been done. In addition, the dash and console were redesigned in 1999. 4wd system was improved in 1999 to allow you to drive in 4wd on dry pavement. If you want safety, then get 2001-2002 4runners because they have stability control, 4-channel ABS, and ATRAC. If you want more hard-core off-roading, then get 1999-2000 4runners with rear electric locker.

As for auto vs. manual, i think that you would have a hard time finding manual. I would stick with auto because it's a very proven unit and is pretty smooth.

I'm quite pleased with my '99 SR5 4WD. It's an automatic. I can drive a manual, but I don't think I would like a 4Runner with one. It's stock right now, and it's quite capable off road. I took it down a snowy hill, turned around and came back up, without any trouble.

I agree with Thai, 99 was a year for some good changes. 96 to 98 currently have a re-call on the rear suspension, so be sure to check that if you get a eariler model. I also agree with Thai 2001 have a few new saftey items added. If you are looking for a 5 speed stick, 2000 was the last year they made that available in the U.S. A stick is definately rare, but they are out there.

I'm sure the rear suspension recall has been covered in depth on this board, but just I just wanted to mention that the recall was specifically for 2wd.

The recall notice was sent to all owners, and it says that 4wd is not subject to the suspension problems, but Toyota was including 4wd vehicles to eliminate "any confusion". As of yet, I have not taken my '97 4wd in.

Not to mention that the recall only covers the early 1998 models (~February).

Luckily, I purchased my '98 in the Fall.

You are absolutely right, to avoid confusion Toyota will cover 4wd. I read that, "to cover their back side, 4wd will be covered". If they cover it I would get it done.

What do you think about a Landcruiser

Thanks very much for the recommendations. I've done some price checking on the 1999 4runners. They're still a bit out of my price range. What do you think about a 1993-1994 Landcruiser?

The LandCruiser 450 is a classic. Last of the great off roaders. Thai was thinking of buying one. See this thread:

Have owned Landcruisers and 4 Runners

Unless you have deep pockets for repairs stay away from the cool looking Landcruisers. I presently own a 2000 4 Runner Sport with 180k on it. Great vehicle and the parts are cheap ( unlike the LAndCruiser).

Probably 99 or 2000 4WD with the least rust and the most service records. The 99-00 are a little nicer than 96-98 and a little simplier than 01-02. And you might find one with an e-locker.

Ah, if only I could time travel back to 2004 to get a 3rd Gen. The market must have been awesome….
