Which 4runner?

We have decided to buy an 06 or 07 4 runner. The question is whether we buy the v-6 or v-8. I have test driven both, and they both seem to have plenty of power. I don't plan on towing anything, and the most it will be loaded with is winter gear, 2 adults/2 kids, for skiing on trips to Colorado, golf clubs for 4, and stuff from Home Depot.
I guess I am looking for some info from owners of both. MPG?, driving impressions?, if you would have rather bought the v-6 or v-8?
I also am curious as to maintenance costs for both. I read about the timing chain v-6 vs timing belt v-8. Are there other cost differences?
I am looking at certified models with 25-35 k, and plan on keeping the 4 runner for 8-10 years.
Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to driving my new 4 runner soon.

I don't think you'll find many with regrets, that's the good news. People love their V6's and those with V8's rave about them in spite of averaging 1-2mpg less.

I have 6 and love it. With no real effort I can easily exceed 18mpg in my daily driving, if I baby it I can avg 20 plus or minus .5mpg.

The V6's have great power but in the mountains the V8 might be really sweet.

You mentioned the timing belt, V8 oil changes are harder too.

I would suspect with fuel prices where they are the difference in price between the V6 and V8 has shrunk. Having said that the V8's are probably an even better value today assuming you have a daily commuter car or don't drive much.

I know I haven't said anything that helps, that's the point. They're both great it just depends. If I were doing again and going to use it as a 2nd or 3rd car I would go for the V8. If I was using it as a daily driver then I'd do the V6 again.

For me it was about money, I wanted an '07 with side-airbags. I had to decide between a 2wd V8 or a 4wd V6. I don't know where I'll live in few years and I like 4wd so I got the V6. Although, where I am today I have no doubt I'd enjoy a 2wd V8.

Good Luck!

Here are a few differences for the model years you are interested in that may or may not help you:

V6 has ability to run in 2wd, V8 is full time 4x4.
V6 has timing chain, V8 has timing belt.
V6 oil filter top of engine, V8 oil filter bottom of engine (behind skid plate).
V6 has a higher pitched sound, and makes a ticking noise; V8 has lower pitched sound, no ticking noise.
V8 has frame mounted hitch, oil cooler, transmission cooler, heavier duty radiator, heavier duty alternator, more horsepower and torque. V6 does not.
V8 costs more.
V6 better gas milage.

edit: I just re-read your post, and since you won't be towing, and with gas prices going the way they are, you'd probably be happy with the V6. And yes, you are right, the V6 does have a lot of power. Good luck! :)

The v6 will be fine for what you are doing. Test drive both and see which one you like better. I have a v8, the v8 gets a little worse mpg, but sounds great and is very smooth. Then again, 1-2mpg difference can add up over time.

Juneau, what is that ticking sound that comes from the V6? any idea?

Simple - dont know if your doing anything tomorrow, but if your up for it we could take some of my toys to the range and lay down some covering fire for a few hours

I have the V8. I love it. You may never plan on towing, but you never know when you might change your mind. I personally love having that low end torque on the trails. The mpg isn't the best, but if you want mpg you don't buy a 4runner, right? You are buying a utility vehicle. It does seem annoying at times that it is full time 4x4, but when you are driving in snow and other terrain...never having to switch into 4x4 mode is a nice plus and even nicer not having to remember to turn it off when you hit pavement again.

Also...if at any point you feel you are underpowered, you can't just bolt on a new engine. You will be stuck with the V6. Although with that said, we have a 1996 4runner that is past 200k with a V6 and it is still running strong and has served us well. But I must say I love having the V8's low end power when I want it.

One last thing to consider, look at the cost of the two if you are buying used...chances are the V6 vs. the V8 isn't really that much. It was nothing buying mine new a year ago.

Enjoy your new truck whatever you choose.

I think it has something to do with the timing chain, but there are far more knowledgeable folks than me here who can input on this.

From what you have said, the V6 should be more than enough for your needs. The only major difference between the two is the V8 has full-time 4WD while the V6 has a multi-mode system. The difference in fuel economy between the V6 and V8 seems to range between 1-3 MPG. Since I bought my truck almost 3 years ago (gas prices were below $2), I decided on the V8 because of the full-time 4WD and the coolness of V8 power. Now, these decision would seem crazy with gas prices.

Also note that the 2006 and 2007 4Runner's are practically identical. You may be able to make a better deal on an '06 and you will be getting the same 4Runner.

If this vehicle is mostly for road trips and you plan to load it with your entire family + gear, I'd go w/ the V8 since you might need the additional power for passing at high altitude. I have the LX470, and I had no problems whatsoever passing other vehicles in uphill passing lanes at 10K ft between Durango and Ouray, CO. It just breezes by with a slight V8 roar. :) Since the 4Runner weighs 900 lbs less than my LX, you should be able to fly up it! I've only driven the V6 runner (SR5 4WD trim) for a week in FL (flat, sea level). Driving was primarily rural @ 50-60mph. I got 20mpg on 2 tanks driven over 1 week, 87 octane, some driving/idling in 4WD on soft dirt/hard pack sand.

In my LX, I average 18.5-19mpg on the interstate/highways @ 69mph on cruise running chevron 91, so at a constant speed, I think it's a wash. For 100% city driving, the LX gets 15-16 mpg. I suspect you should be able to get 17mpg in the 4runner V8 due to less weight provided you're easy on the accelerator. There is a noticeable drop in fuel economy in the LX if I run 87...drop is around 1.5 mpg. That's a 10% drop while 91 costs only 5% more than 87, so you might also think about fuel economy this way.

OTOH, if you plan to use it as a DD, I'd get the V6, as you'll need every mpg you can get.

Some additional items:
1) In regards to the timing chain vs. belt, the belt on the V8 is spec'd to be changed at 90K intervals. Timing chains are usually much longer, like 150-200K mi (or whenever they start making that clanking sound which doesn't go away after a few seconds after startup). On my 22re, a timing chain replacment cost is $1.3K at the dealer. T-belt prices are typically around $500 (you do it twice as often, but it costs half as much). Water pumps typically start weeping around 120K mi, so it's a toss up. On my 4runner, I did the t-chain at 150K as PM since it was my only vehicle and I planned to keep it for many years.

2) Spark plugs: on the V6, it's recommended to change spark plugs every 30K mi. The V8 uses iridium plugs, which last 120K mi.

The 2UZ V8 is very easy on oil. My capacity is 8 qts (I reckon the 4runner would be a tad less), but the oil color doesn't darken easily like on the 4-bangers I have. Oil consumption is nil even over the 7.5K OCI's I run. If you search the landcruiser 100 forum on ih8mud.com, you'll find that the 2UZ doesn't consume oil and used oil analysis numbers are excellent. Another advantage of the V8 is it's been proven over 10 yrs in the Landcruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, and 4Runner.

I appreciate all the input. We just picked up our new 4 runner.
2006 Sport V-8, Salsa Red.
Looking forward to spending some time in it.
thanks again.

Both are great , I have a V8 and love it , but would not hesitate to own the 6 either. I love the towing goodie that come on the v8 ( heavy duty hitch , oil cooler , tranny cooler , ect....) I was disappointed in the hitch on the v6 though , it's wimpy compared to mine.

I was at my dealer for a bit on Saturday. The had a demo. 08 there with 2 options I really would like to have 1> side curtain air bags 2> VSC off switch. It is the Titanium Silver which I also love and it has a v6. 4100 miles ( currently have 45K on my 06 ) if it had a v8 I would consider trading if the deal was excellent . I'll drive it for the hell of it anyway.

V8 timing belt needs to be replaced at 90k miles.

Oil changes I go to the dealer anyway so I don't care if the filter is harder to get at. My dealer sends me coupons all the time for oil, lube, filter and fluid top off for any where from $19.95-24.95 + tax so IMO it not even worth my time .
