which bull bar do you like best?

Im looking at 3 different flavors of hunter bull bars (Muti did you ever get yours?)

I sort of favor the classic first....all three are pre-drilled for lights.

HEy man, those are the ones Im looking at too. For me, I think the second one or the last one are the best. I havent ordered one yet though as Im looking at s2000s right now too, and also dont want to put the bull bar on until I can get new bumpers and have them and the fender flares painted.

just my honest opinion...

Bull bars seem pretty tacky on a 4Runner with the fatlip bumper. It just kind of emphasizes how far the front sticks out (from the side at least)..

They seem like they're worthy candidates of doing more damage than protection, if you get in an accident, that may just cause more problems.

There are other ways to mount lights that don't look really cheesy.

That tacoma photo is so shopped lol.

Id prefer afar cleaner, more understated look like the bull bars rather then those gigantic, homemade looking things. Im not trying to pretend I live in a jungle either because I dont.

Bull bars look cool on cop cars... the ones for the 4R ive seen look like they'll bend and crumple if you so much as tap another car... how thick is the steel? Personally, If I had to get a bull bar, I'd aim for a black one! One that isn't so curvaceous too... give it an aggressive, mean look. Just as long as it actually performs a good function and has some strength, not like those lame brush guards that do more damage in accidents.

Okay well I never really thought about this angle - the thing is frame mounted - and Id have to lose my front tow hooks for installation. Are you saying there's more potential to eff my frame in an accident?

I don't want a full brush guard on my front end - I don't think I need it, but I definitely do stop to help people in the middle of the road and thought it would be a good option to push and to mount lights on?

Unfortunately I cant afford a 1K bumper option :cry2:

I believe the damage comes because these bull bars just pivot back in a wreck and are pushed into the hood.

These dont even come close to the hood, they barely come up the bumper. I dont see how they could cause more damage to the bumper then if they werent there.

I was rear-ended by a rav4 with a brush guard (I wasn't in my t4r). There was some minor paint damage to my bumper and his front end was destyoyed from a minor impact - maybe 10 mph. the guard ripped though his radiator and folded his hood in half! Love or hate the looks of them, they can really do some damage if you are in an accident.

I think the ARB or similar is much more well suited to protect from an offroad nose dive because of the nature of what it is.

Push bars got their name from their function. It also provides a place for additional light mounting.

I'm in the south. I'm not rock crawling. Although I have a couple houses in Colorado, so I suppose there is a chance I could one day

For me in southern city living I'm considering it an option to use it for the function. Sitting in 2 miles of traffic because someone is broke down in the middle of the road I would be the one who stopped and offered to push them the hell out of the way. The push bar allows my higher vehicle to line up with their bumper better. My 2nd gen was low. It wasn't as much of an issue. My 3rd gen I have to hop to get into - much higher.

So in truth for off roading it probably doesn't offer a HUGE amount of protection. In city it offers, looks, its functional purpose, and a place to mount lights.

I'm still not sold on it. I think I'll dig around and see if KellyJ ever posted a writeup of how he mounted lights directly to his bumper. I just hate the permanency of that proposal.

I can imagine that if the bull bar was hit in a nose dive, it would just bend up into your bumper, grille, hood, what have you. Like someone said earlier, someone ended up with a bull bar all the way in their radiator.

IMO it's a mod that people do when they want to make their mall crawler look tough...

Take a good look and realize that brush guards are of very similar construction, if anything, it should be considered a bull bar with little headlight things hanging off of it.

That still leaves 7 bull bars and 3 brush guards in the last 2 posts

If you want a bullbar, look to mister Weston Miller.

Yet, while bullbars are more likely to crumple under the stress of hitting another car or object, people are a lot more fragile.

My 2nd gen pushed a little cars trunk ALL the way to the rear seats at 20mph. No push/bull/brush guard. The damage I incurred was a cracked turn signal.

Death comes to plenty of small cars if they want to play with a bigger truck / SUV...with or without a front guard

The last part was a joke, I found that on google images.

I have difficulty believing that last bit though, we have a 92 pickup with a 2nd gen 4Runner front end conversion. It's literally a 4Runner without a back, as we all know, but there's no way in hell that it could do that much damage with just a cracked signal. Is this 4Runner made of lead? OR did you hit a paper mache car?

Hell, not even my old 87 560SEL (which was literally made of pure steel) squashed a honda bumper to hell but still pushed in the fender. It even got rear ended by an Escalade once, the Escalade's front was rather damaged and I got a dent in my license plate and a few scratches on the bumper. That car incurred damage and a 2nd gen would only incur more.

I've dealt with the front end of a 2nd gen enough to know that they crumple easily, in fact if I search hard enough, I can probably find some pics of it when a wall met the front end, or when the bumper and part of the left fender got destroyed after a guy in a PT cruiser backed into it at <5 mph.
