I'm looking to get a camshaft for a 22re. i know theres lots of forum topics on camshafts but non of them answer my question so what would you guys recommend. i have the need for speed and enjoy driving even if it for no reason so i would like to get better performance but i don't want to go to crazy on a camshaft but something to give it better city and highway performance.

www.engnbldr.com has a cam for performance street. I think building a 22re for speed is a lot like putting lipstick on a pig, but it's your truck .

I have one of his camshafts, love it so far. The cam you want depends on what you want/need from it. The analogy of the pig is pretty accurate

engnbldr's 261 or 268 cam would be a good choice.

call them directly, and explain exactly what you what to do with the truck. a custom ground cam isn't that expensive, and will work the best.

city and country back road. i understand 22re's are under powered no matter what and I'm use to under powered engine because i drive a 85 mazda rx7 90hp rotary in the summer and i find that car to be really fun to drive but I'm just wondering what other people use for street and highway.

Most people don't build these trucks for street and highway, they run them stock or build for offroad.

I've got 33" tires, 5.29 gears, a 5 speed trans, and a 22RE with some mild mods for low range torque (Thorley long tube header, 261 cam). It's fun to scoot around town, it gets off the line faster than my wife's '99 with the 5VZE and will actually accelerate in 5th gear. Everybody that rides with me that knows what a stock 22RE feels like gets out of the truck impressed. The tradeoff is I don't normally go faster than 70 or 75 mph because the RPMs get a little too high for comfort.

Assuming that you're a 5 speed with 4.10 gears and stock tire size, I'd do this - look for a set of 4.30 differentials, score a used exhaust header, and get engnbldr's 268 cam. Then get your motor in perfect tune and push your timing up to about 12 BTDC or as far as you can go without pinging. That'll wake your little motor up and won't sacrifice reliability in the slightest.

For what it's worth I ran the 261 can in my 86. You could tell the difference but it wasn't like the cam made it a racecar.
