Which exhaust should I pick?

Wondering what's the most popular or best exhuast upgrade for the 90-95 4runner V6 4x4's. Do you gain a lot of HP or is it more for the sound? B/c My Corvette has a loud exhuast, headers and all....typical muscle car... but i'm kinda tired of that. How crappy is the stock exhaust is really what I should be asking. B/c I don't want to do a $500 Catback system for a 5HP gain. What kind of numbers and noise levels are we talking and options?

Most of the time, if you want siginifant gain in HP, then you need to change both the intake and exhaust.

Changing just the exhaust will produce more sound than real HP. And remember, if you are not careful with the diameter of the exhaust, you may LOSE torque.

Under the best scenarios, exhaust will gain about 5-10 Hp at most.
 
I plan on doing a full intake..(filter, tubing, etc.). I know a lot about Exhaust on V8's and turbo cars, but as for a V6 Toyota...no idea. I can also build my own exhaust. I weld very well and have done a mandrel bent $800 exhaust on my Corvette. I was thinking if I do it myself just remove the cat (but flange it so I can replace it for emissions if need be ...so flange the cat) and do 2.5" MANDREL bent piping with a nice muffler single exit. What kind of pipe diamter does Toyota Use on the 90-95's? How many mufflers and resonaters?

Don't waste your money on a packaged kit. You should be able to get a good sound and dual pipes for under $300. Go get a custom job at a reputable muffler shop in your town and tell them exatly what you want, how you want it to sound, etc., and let them recommend something and a price. Then go find another estimate or two and then get the one you like the looks of and price of the best. That is what they do for a living so use your local expertise. Or weld it yourself after you buy the parts!

If I do that, I'll be welding it up myself. What do you reccomend for a set up? I want to keep it Single pipe if it's not hurting performance to much. I'm thinking unbolt it directly from the header's Y and make my own 2.5" flange for it and use 2.5" mandrel, no cat, a nice muffler and a suddle chrome side pipe. Nice, but suddle. Any tips or other set ups you've done? Noise levels? I'd like it to be a bit louder outside the truck... but I don't want the whole cabin to resonate like in my Corvette with duals.

If you can weld, definitely do it yourself and save a fortune in labor cost. The parts shouldn't be much. I'd use a flowmaster muffler, has a nice low growl but not too loud so that it rattles your fillings in your teeth, and the rest sounds okay. Stay with the factory coming out the side instead of out the back as you would drag when off-roading and choke when the back window is down.

What series Flowmasters do you reccomend? 50 series? I didn't think a flowmaster would sound good on a V6 3.0 Toyota..wow. I was thinking more of a Borla, Magnaflow etc. "typical mufller" design ya know.
