Which has better 4x4. LexusGx460 or 4 runner trail

Hi

The base 2014 gx 460 has a full time 4x4 with limited slip and a centre locker.

The 2014 trail edition four runner has 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive mode. The four wheel would have limited slip and a rear locker.

If I understand the difference when in 4 x4 with your locker engaged the four runner when it loses traction to the front wheel will spin both rear tires whereas the gx will spin a front and rear wheel in low traction situations.

Is this correct?

Which 4x4 system would you say is better and why?

Better for what? The part time system on the 4runner trail is essentially always locked. So the front and rear will both turn and the same speed....same same as when the center diff on the GX is locked. Because of this, you cannot use the 4WD on the 4runner on high-grip surfaces when turning.

The locking rear diff in the 4runner will keep both sides of the rear axle turning at the same rate. So, if a wheel is in the air or slipping, it will not spin freely.

The rear locker will get you through tougher terrain, but the AWD might be nice if you live somewhere snowy. You can also get KDSS on the trail which gives you more articulation and therefore better tire contact on uneven surfaces. Also big price difference....

the 4runner trail would be a better choice if more offroad, the 460 if more daily driving duties, although the v8 is a nice power jump from the 4.0L V6, I just switched from a fj with the V6 to a 06 GX470 and I am loving the power increase

Ahhh, KDSS is standard on the GX.
