Which one is the better value??

Hi everyone,

I've been looking for a used 4runner for sometime. I was going to purchase an 06 SR5 with 81k miles that was loaded for $17500 but changed my mind. Mostly because I saw these two.

One is an 07 Limited, 4wd with 83k miles for $16000 and the other is an 01 SR5 with 4wd, sunroof, 106k miles for $7500. Both are V6. The 07 limited price is pretty firm but I think I can lower the price on the 01.

I'm thinking the 01 is a better deal. The owner claims that he changed the water pump, timing belt, new tires and brakes recently. With the 07, I'll have to change the water pump and timing belt soon.

Assuming that both have had the all scheduled maintenance done and assuming both vehicles are found to have no issues after a mechanic looks at them, which do you think would be the better deal?

My own personal preference would be the older, cheaper one, especially if you can get the price down even more. 106k miles is nothing on these rigs, and the savings would allow you to put some goodies on it to increase the fun quotient, and do so much sooner. The 3rd Gen's are solid performers, and would serve you well. Best of luck!

I second that!!!

I would go with the '07. They are better in pretty much every way than the 3rd gen...more powerful, more refined, more features. If you test drive each, you will immediately feel the '01 lacks power compared to the 4.0L in the '07. Also, the '07 DOES NOT need a timing belt change....it has a timing chain which never needs to be changed. The V8s have the timing belt in the 4th gens. I would go for a 4th gen V8, but I'm biased :D
