which products to use for wheels?

Just curious on what you people use on your wheels to keep them clean and also protect the clearcoat. I heard you can use wax or polish... can anyone give me some more info on this?

Basically, the clearcoat on the wheels is like the one on your paint, so it's a good idea to treat it the same way, and thus protecting them is a good idea.

Once or twice a year, I like to clay my rims, polish them out with a light abrasive and use a paint sealant on them (Zaino, Klasse). A regular wax is not able to withstand the heat that's generated when driving, so it's kind of useless to use a regular carnauba wax. A paint sealant is usually capable of withstanding higher temperatures. As for cleaning wheels, dedicated wheel cleaners are good, but, most wheel cleaners are harsh (some are alkaline and some are acidic) and will remove the paint sealant/wax you applied. So you'll have to wash them with regular car soap. I usually use a very strong solution of car wash soap with a few brushes to get my rims clean.

eagle 1 makes some good wheel cleaners that are neutral to clear coats on rims.

about the only thing i get from eagle 1 is wheel cleaner stuff and carnuba wax when i use to spend time cleaning my truck. now its just easier to pay someone else to do the work. old age you know.

I wax the wheels on sportscars as well as on my 4Runner. The wax helps keep some of the brake dust off. I use regular carnuaba wax. Do you have problems with your wheels getting hot?? I've touched the wheels of a Porsche after spirited driving and found them to be no warmer than any body panel.

Depends on the material and pattern of the wheel. Some dissipate and transfer heat better than others...

For stock, clear coated wheels.....I use soap and water and then a good wax....nuthin' special.....:biggrin2:

Simple Green or Meguiar's Hot Wheels cleaner for cleaning. I use regular car wax on the wheels when I have time, but I don't think the wax holds up the warm temperature of the rims though.

on cold/cool rims you can use a degreaser...i use simple green.

on warm wheels, nothing but soap and water.

after that as previously mentioned, you can use just about any normal paint product.

I use mothers Cleaner/Wax on mine once a year.
