Which Tires should I get??? Michelin or Cooper

OK, so my Michelin Cross Terrains (OEM tires from factory on my 2007 Limited V8 4WD) now have 67,000 miles on them and getting close to the wear marks but not all the way yet.

I want to replace them within the next 3k miles or so.

I LOVE the Cross Terrains but they have been discontinued. They have zero road noise and they handle great in rain and good in snow.

The tire I am now considering is the Michelin LTX MS/2 with a 70K mile warranty is right at $1000 including tax (for 4 tires) installed at Costco (after a $70 mail in rebate).

The other tire I am thinking of is the Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus with a 60K mile warranty and is currently on sale a t Pep Boys for $580 including tax after a $125 mail in rebate.

The Coopers seem like a killer deal, but will they ride quiet and last (treadwear) like the Michelins?

I don't mind spending $400 more for the Michelins but I wonder if they will be THAT much better than the Coopers?

Not to muddy the water, but I hear alot of good things about Toyo Open Country A/Ts and Yokohama Geolanders too.

Any thoughts are appreciated especially from you guys who run the Coopers, Toyos or Yokohamas!!

I don't off road, so being in Atlanta, heavy rain on paved roads is what I normally encounter and occasionally snow here and in NC.

Tires

I replaced my stock Dunlops with Michelin Cross Terrains two years ago and I agree with you that they are awesome. I paid $550 for four installed at Costco. $1,000 sounds a little expensive.

I don't have any first hand experience with Cooper's, but I think that you can't go wrong with Michelin. They are not ideal for off-road, but like you I pretty much deal with rain and snow only.

I hear a lot of great things about Nitto's and they should be considered. For highway and street driving in all weathers, I vote for Michelins.

Certain businesses may no longer stock them, but they must surely still be available somewhere near you. The CTs are definitely my choice to replace my current CTs when these ones wear out.

When I shopped for my cross terrains last year I got the same story...that they were discontinued and replaced with a new LTX. You can still find them around with some searching.

(just upgraded to BFGs and am selling the Michelins if anybody is interested. 50% tread. $200+ shipping from London, Ont)

I've read a lot of positive comments about Cooper tires, but I had a set of Discoverer H/T's on a Tacoma a few years ago and didn't like them. They were made with a very hard rubber compound which gave very long tread life but poor traction even on dry pavement sometimes. I don't know if the fact that I had a Light Truck version instead of a Passenger version made a difference or not. Like I said, I've seen a lot of satisfied Cooper customers out there. I just didn't have a positive experience.

I agree that the Cross Terrain is an EXCELLENT tire.

You should seriously consider the Cooper Discoverer ATR. They have a more aggressive tread than the H/T, but they are very quiet (I'd say almost silent) on the road and they are a great all-around tire. I've also found them to be excellent in the snow. I like them so much that I'm now on my second set.

Thanks! It's nothing special...basically stock. I just have FJ wheels and a 1-inch leveling lift up front.

Jed, do you recall how many miles you put on your first set of Coopers?

I just looked on Tirerack.com for the Michelin CTs and all I found in the Michelin category (in my size....265/60/18) was the LTX.

BTW, if I order my tires online and have them shipped to a local Atlanta shop, what should I expect to pay for the mounting and balancing?

The Toyo H/T is readily availible in the Atlanta market and definitely worth a look. I am running them now. Mine came with C/T's and these are every bit as good. What I can't speak to is the overall life but I suspect they will go the distance. They have a 60k treadwear warranty. So far they are very round, quiet, good in the rain etc. The rubber behaves as any premium tire should, no ridiculous squeal, good ride and slow to wear. It took a few thousand miles to get the little hair-like nubbies off!

Jed, do you recall how many miles you put on your first set of Coopers?

Well, I had about 24K on them before two of them got slashed by punk kids in the neighborhood. They smashed windows and/or slashed tires on about 20 cars on my street. On one hand, I guess I got off lucky because they only slashed my tires....nothing else was touched on my 4Runner. On the other hand, my 4Runner is ALWAYS in the garage at night, but that particular night I had the garage full of furniture to make room for new carpet installation.

So I just got 4 new tires and called it a day. I didn't measure it, but the tread appeared to be about 50% gone after 24K miles. These tires have deeper tread than most tires.

The CT is still available but only in very limited sizes, like the stock 265 17's, but not the stock 265 16's. There may still be old stock available at some stores.
The Latitiude Tour is the new CT replacement meant for the SUV/Crossover's whereas the new LTX M/S^2 replaces the original LTX M/S, meant for the Light Truck (pickup) crowd, but it's also an excellent choice on a T4R.
I'll probably give the Lat Tour a try when my CT's eventually wear out.

I have a Land Cruiser Prado and in that suv I run Geolandar's those tires are great for the city even with wet floor, and off road the had worked for me but im not a great fan of off roading so i really dont have a deep experience, but you should consider them.

In my 4runner i run the OEM here in Mexico those are the Bridgetone's Dueler H/T, not a fan but im changing the rims soon so I can wait.

If you only use it in the city Toyo's Proxes are a great option, i run the in a Lincoln Aviator and the work perfectly even with wet pavement

I have had 3 sets of ATR's on my 99 and they are great, they lasted me about 60 to 70 K miles and are awesome in the snow. I need a set of tires for my 07 and I am considering them although the Michelins have a nice ride and are quiet, but expen$ive. I am also considering the CTS from Cooper, it seems to have a tread pattern better for the highway and still well rated (by Cooper) for the snow. Unfortunately Cooper tires are not sold by tire rack and it is tough to get ratings from a large number of people which imo is a good overall assessment of the tire.
