Which tires should I go with?

To everyone else, thanks for your reply's. My heart was set on the Duratrac's so I really don't want to settle for another tire. I'm going in to 4 Wheel Parts on Tuesday to talk with the manager and see what kind of deals they would offer, even though I'll most likely end up cancelling my order. Also to anyone who plans on purchasing tires from 4WP, I advise that you look elsewhere. The prices are good, but the availability and customer service will make you want to pay the extra cost. I will update the thread once I talk to 4WP. You guys are awesome, keep the replies coming.

Discount Tire
 
Just tried discount tire and the duratrac's are on back order there also. So should I wait until February and get a discount from 4wp, pick a different tire, or cancel my order?

tylerbaird, go look at Kuhmo KL78 and see if it looks aggressive enough for you. It came out on top (by my reckoning) in CRs recent AT tire tests.

Or just get the tire you'll enjoy looking at and call it a day.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic regarding C.R. and their measurements or not but, some of the tire choices I've seen here don't always come from tire rack's inventory.
On the other hand, I too made a comment in a different thread regarding checking out the Kumho's KL78s as well, as I have purchased Kumhos before and have been very content with their performance for the money. :party:

They've got the duratracs in stock at 5 discount tire store here's inSan Antonio if your willing to make the drive.

I was just pointing out that whatever else tire conversations are for, they don't seem to be for actually determining tire performance.

If I were in the market, I'd be all over the Kuhmos.
 
Just tell 4wp that you have special axles with 6 on 5.5 under your Jeep and you will have them overnight.

I would love to see a test that tested all aspects of an A/T tire including off road and on road performance with regarding wet and dry traction and control in standing water and slush,etc plus even throw in puncture tests.
 
How about a test that only covers dry braking--dry handling--wet braking--hydroplaning--snow traction--ice braking--noise--comfort--rolling resistance--tread life?
 
Went on Discount Tire's website and I'm thinking about getting some all black Level 8 Strike 6's with C load 265/75/R16 Duratrac's. Opinions? Can't wait to go into 4WP and cancel my order.
 
dude stay away from 4wp, they are terrible! i have bought i dont know how much crap from them and its all just that, crap. the only thing i will ever go to 4wp for is pro comp tires(i like them a lot and they have the best deals on them) and sense 4wp owns pro comp getting a hold of a set is never a problem, they usually have a set in stock and or 2-3 days out if not.

i have been to several 4wp in my day and the one on 82nd is by far the worst one i know of, they guys who work their are all ****s(look at how they ****ing park their cars, just how ever the **** they feel like, and its not like their customer parking is at a surplus. that ass clown manager who drives the black charger who parks it sideways and takes up two spots... man if i worked for portland PD id ticket his car or any vehicle in their lot who is not parked correctly (ie over onto the side walk, taking up more than one spot, ect.) i dont care if it is a customers car, id hope they lose business over it... anyhow yeah enough of a rant on 4wp on 82 ave. -probably a good think im not a portland cop lol

duratracs are ok tires, but i think their are some better ones out there, some of the guys at america tire that i know have had some issues with the duratracs being hard to balance once they get 20-30K or so on them, and they get progressively loud and louder as they wear.

i would go with the nitto terra grapplers, they are an amazing tire with great road manors and good in the snow and ice that we see here in portland, i would be running those, but i bought a set of big horn mud tires and a set of snow tires for the winter(cause MTs suck on packed snow and ice) and thats mainly what we see here in portland. those nittos were also great off road for an all terrain tire, i never got stuck once with those, and they only stopped me short one time, but i was able to back out of where i was and turn around and go back. i tried the same thing(place and conditions) again this year(spring time) with the big horns and only made it about another 100 yards, then this fall i went back this time with my ARB installed and was able to make the trail just fine. point being that the nittos will serve you well off road when you need it. your rig doesnt look like its too "built" at this point so i dont think the tires are going to be your limiting factor in this. i know guys who run trails out in the tillimook stare forest who have 3+" of lift armor, ect and they are running all terrains and are just fine, can do most of the stuff out there as long as their are smart and pick their line. even some of the guys with stock rigs and all terrains are making it a ton of places, the only thing holding them/us back from more stuff is clearance and bigger tires/stronger axles...

now i have not ran the duratracs so i have no personal experiance with them, but like another guy here said, when it comes down to tires, its gonna be a personal opinion and or popularity contest....

Thanks for the reply man. I have never heard anyone bring that up about the Duratrac's before, so that is very useful knowledge. I'll have to talk with the guys at Discount and see what they have to say about them. I do like the Terra Grapplers and have heard nothing but good things about them. I'm just looking for something more aggressive, and I think Duratrac's are the closest thing next to a mud tire. I completely agree with the 82nd 4WP's being a horrible place to do business. It's obvious they don't give a s**t about their customers, even the ones who are trying to spend nearly $1500 in their store. Never again will I go through them for anything. It's good to hear from someone who's had experience in this store. Thanks for the suggestions man, I deeply appreciate it.
 
well if you want an aggressive tire but dont want a mud terrain then i guess the durratrac is what you want then, cause as a "hybrid" tire, i think its the only one out there... good luck

what part of portland are you from/in?
 
Duratracs are roughly only about 3 years old so a lot of personal experiences from new til they are worn out aren't super common yet but I know a few people that ran them til about 50k miles and none of them reported any issues as they wore so I'd still like to see some consistent reports about the Duratracs but I will be paying close attention to mine as they wear. I'm still less then 20k on mine so I have a ways to go.

I ran TG for 45k miles previous to my Duratracs and they were a very good tire to me on and off road and were solid in the snow despite not wearing the snowflake emblem but Duratracs intrigued me so I gave them a try. Would I go back to a TG? If I off roaded a little less I probably would since their prices are still pretty good.
 
Just to keep you guys up to date, I went in to 4WP today and cancelled my order. Right after that I drove down to my local America's/Discount Tire and placed an order for 265/75/R16 C load Duratrac's with all black Level 8 Strike 6 wheels (16X8.5, 4.5 backspacing). Both the wheels and tires are being shipped from AZ so I should have them on my truck by the end of next week. I can't wait! I will post pics once they are on my truck. Thanks to everyone who offered advice!
 
Alright guys, sorry to keep you waiting but I've been super busy and finally had some time to drop off the truck. I love the look of the Level 8's with the Duratrac's. Let me know what you think!
