Which Winter Tires Are You Going To Run?

It's no trouble getting places... it's stopping when you get there.

Exactly!! All Seasons just don't cut it, especially out east where you have so much moisture to make things even more slippery.

My brother runs studs on winter tires and always used to think his was superior, so we did a head to head test on streets with packed snow around -15 degrees and I didn't feel enough of a difference to warrant the need for studs.

Living somewhere you don't need to worry about commuting in snow and ice is good. Living somewhere you don't get to do any winter wheeling is bad.

Before you go all "search-and-rescue, snow camping and wheeling" I'm manlier than you are on me, I live in both Portland and Hood River and work on Mt Hood year round so keep your "I will guaranty I see way more snow and ice than you" opinions to yourself. My TE is a 2010 and I've never had to chain-up in all my commutes. The DuraTracs with STUDS are an excellent set-up, just not your set-up. So grow up!

Yep. I had a few different sets of winter tires in the past but nothing has really compared to how excellent Blizzaks are. I bought the DM-V1s that fit the stock Limited wheels and they are absolutely unstoppable in snow and ice. Super impressed.

One of my first threads here was asking about snow tires, and Lolrax suggested the Blizzaks to me back last December. I bought them for my 4R based on his and other recs for the Blizzaks. I've only used them one winter, but they were great!!

Nokian is my #1 choice for winter weather, West coast rain all the way to Rocky Mountains snow. Hakkapaellitas are the undisputed best snow tires, and the WR-series all-seasons (that's the Finnish definition) I have had have put other winter tires to shame on their own. These guys pioneered silica-embedded tread compounds.

I have been impressed with every tire from General I have had, so either the Altimax as a dedicated snow tire, or the Grabber AT2 with the snowflake symbol would be something I'd consider.

Never understood why people put winter tires on their 4x4 SUV's.... Unless your a female driver......
ONLY time I bought winter tires was for a RWD supercharged Mercedes... Otherwise would be impossible to drive in snow...

I live in New England.... We get lots of snow... I plow thru a foot and a half of snow on my stock Bridgestone duelers which SUCK IMO

Unless your living in the mountain region.... No reason to get "winter" tires, never mind studs...

My Duratracs did me well last winter. I have a new set waiting to go on but my current ones still have a good bit of tread left.

I've decided to go all out and put winter tires on my 4R. I could get away with A/T's, but being up in Northern Canada (I may be the furthest North than anyone on here?) I'm going to throw dedicated winters on to make it a beast in the snow and ice.

I'm leaning towards Michelin XI3's. I had X-Ice 2's before and loved them but they wore quick on my old Cavalier.

The other toss up is the Goodyear Ultra Grips.

What are you running this year??

I have excellent success with the Nokian Hakkapaliitas. Very happy with their performance in the snow and ice. I was also very impressed with how well they wore over 5 seasons of winter driving the in the mountains of Colorado.

I am now running Cooper winter / studded tires (details in my sig) and they have been pretty good. I only have one season on them thus far, but they are doing an above average job of performing in the winter out here. :cheers:

You're kidding, right? The tire compound is the only thing connecting 2 tons of your truck to the road. It might be a fairly small difference and negligible in most cases, but it does help. It's actually the same reason that you already see the value on your Mercedes. It doesn't become invalidated based on 4WD or AWD.

Not sure how you can deny the difference in stopping distances for literally the same car with only tires being the variable. Not just braking though..... brakes, acceleration, skidpad (cornering grip), graded acceleration.

If I have a choice, I'll take a winter tire for 3 months a year over AS or AT tires. Just because you actually plow through 1.5ft of snow doesn't mean you have the best grip. It actually just means you're probably making it difficult for the drivers around you. (When I drove my AWD Mazda with the "sissy girl winter tires", I used to curse the jackass SUV drivers that thought 4WD and ground clearance was everything... but they were the ones actually causing accidents with unpredictable response in handling and braking)

I am nominating this for most ignorant comment of the year. Are you actually a car enthusiast with a 4x4 and this uninformed? Absolutely ridiculous. In sub zero temperatures Winter tires are a life or death issue if you ask me.

I'm going to be using nokian haka 7 studded this year(when I can find some rims) we have the non studded on our pathfinder and they have been excellent

I think if you actually read the OP's post you would see that he is in northern Canada, hence his need for a dedicated snow tire. Our roads are cleared to pavement within 24hrs, or less, from a storm whereas his roads are hard pack snow and ice where even the Duratrac's would need studs

Gonna run 17" Blizzak DM-V1's because of this thread and the price of alternatives. Costco has a decent price in them right now with a $70 discount.
