Which wire can I use for hard wiring my GPS?

I know I have seen it somewhere here, but I cannot find the thread. Basically I am looking for a hot wire to tap my GPS power cord into. Currently it plugs into a cigarette lighter, but I want to hard wire it to free up the lighter socket. This is in a 2006 4Runner Limited. I don't have a probe to find a hot wire. I would like the GPS to turn off when the key is turned off.

Are you mounting up by the mirror or on the dash? The mirror is easy- hot wire to the map lights that turn off with key- I have my radar detector wired to that. Or you can pull out the 12v outlet/tray deal, and tap into both +/- wires there for your gps. If you only have the cigarette lighter plug for the gps, you can buy a female lighter socket at the autoparts store, and wire that in. Put it under the center console and run the wires to where you need it. I did that to my mazda MX5.
 
Thanks for the info. I already hardwired my radar detector to the two wires under the cig lighter near the shifter. So, I need to find a place to tap into for my GPS hard wire project. It will sit on the dash, to the left of the steering wheel. Beginnning to think that I should buy the Add-A-Circuit.

Or, buy a test probe and find a hot wire and use it. If anyone know which wire I can use, please let me know.

Sorry, not sure which wire you should use. Definitely invest in a $5 test probe (circuit tester) to keep in your toolbox. Very useful for finding power, trouble shooting things like trailer lights that don't work, etc.). Open your fuse box, ground the test light clamp to solid metal, and probe around with the ignition on for a hot source. Best bet is to look for radio, aux, cig lighter, 12v outlet, etc. When you find it- turn key off to make sure it goes off with ignition. Then any auto parts store should sell a little metal thingy that clips over the fuse so you tap power. Or you can do the add-a-circuit. I like buying electronic stuff from these guys. Very cheap and they have all kinds of stuff.

Hey, I know the thread is all but dead, but I have a quick question...

You guys don't by chance have the wiring diagram for the overhead lights (map, I think), do you? I am hard wiring a valentine one below the mirror, and I'd like as much information as I can find to ensure I tap the right wires and get it taken care of right. I'm working on my 07 SE that has no auto-dimming mirror. I ordered the wire cover from the dealer, so all I really need is info on the right color wires, their locale, and how to disassemble the overhead area to get to that liner.

Any and all info would be welcome. Thanks.
