Whine while in Gear

So my 4runner has developed a distinct whine while on the throttle and in gear. at idle, in park it is not present, but when I shift into gear I get a distinct whine that gets more prpminent with RPM (to a point, then levels out). Honestly, sounds just like a supercharger whine. Obviously, I don't have a supercharger so this presents a problem. I thought it was my PS pump (which made terrible noises otherwise) so I replaced it with a unit from a salvage yard (terrible noises stopped but the persistent whine stayed. It doesn't change when I turn the wheels and the fact that it only does it while in gear points me in another dierection. However, the fact that it's throttle based and is present when stationary rules out the transfer case or differentials. Any ides here, guys? Is this a common issue? It's beginning to drive me insane.

Sometimes a whine, especially when under load leads me to believe that either a fuel filter or pump is on it's way out. Obviously start small (That is, if you haven't replaced it yet) and replace the fuel filter first.
 
Sounds exactly like what mine did i had to replace the torque converter and pump in the tranny. If you keep running it when the converter fails it will most likely trash your transmission with metal bits, that's what the technician told me would happen at least. To replace everything plus flush the whole system cost me $850. so hopefully its something else but it sounds like it is. Best of luck to you.

That's what I was thinking as well, since it seems to increase with load.

Let's hope not. If it goes, I'll just get a used unit to go in it. I'm not a fan of flushing.
 
Are you getting any slippage(That you can feel or notice) out of your transmission, while going down the road or hwy.? Have you at one point or another experienced tranny problems while trying to go into or out of Park/Reverse/Neutral? I would think(Don't Quote me on this though) that if your tranny was going out you would experience some sort of shifting symptoms. Al though I would assume that if it was the TC (Torque Converter), it would throw a Code of some sort. Just my speculations though.
 
Are you guys serious? I hear the whine a lot while driving. I thought that's how these trucks are supposed to sound. Wow looks like I may have to spend some money now.

Sounds like a pinion bearing to me. Pinion bearings can whine if the diff fluid ever got low due to a clogged diff beather and leaking axel seals. Removing the thrid member is not very difficult but the pinion gear must be also removed and getting it set up again is hit or miss for a non-pro. I had a whine like you decribe and it was the pinion bearing. I had all new bearings and a trutrac installed while the diff was out. Your still looking at couple hundred for the diff work if you have a shop do it.

This guy could be on to something as well since the whining sound can also be a bearing, whether it be a Wheel, or Pinion like B.A. is pointing out ^ ..

Thanks, that was my thought, it sounded just like pinion bearing but then I re read the post and the OP said it does it while parked and just reving the engine (if I reading it right)

So I deleted my post.lol

That's funny. I've always been able to delete ones that needed it before someone froze them with a quote. But I've been lucky...

Yep, does it when vehicle is stationary. The converter spins all the time when the motor is turning, so I would think it would make noise in park just like any other gear. I'm not saying it's not the converter but I'm not having any other symptoms. Shifts are all good, no slippage, nothing.

I'm thinking I'm best off starting with the fuel filter, considering the miles and unknown maint. the truck has.

Yeah my 4runner only does it when I accelerate so I doubt its anything transmission related at least for me. I'm thinking it maybe could be the alternator. I did a quick google search earlier and discovered a few stories about bad alternators. Maybe you should have that checked as well.

Mine did not have any performance issues from the tranny and only made the noise well in gear and replacing converter got rid of the noise.
 
Just drove around today and I didn't hear the whine. But I think I heard it for a little bit today though. I doubt its the tc for me.
