Lol exactly... I'm sorry, but there is no possible way that the stereo is going to make noise when powered off...
In the same way some TV's will produce noise when they are not receiving input. I'm not sure if there is a fancy name for the isolators (hell, they might be called something that simple) but the produce some feedback into the system that comes through the speakers. If the wiring is really bad, it doesn't matter whether the head unit is on or off. I had that happen on an old F-150 years ago, $10 part and great sound... but it was still a crap truck.

If you say not receiving input on the TV, that can still allow for the tv to be "powered on". The sound comes from the 60 Hz AC power coming through a low quality power supply that doesn't filter that out, especially as you said on older analog boxes.
Either way, the stereo has to be powered on for these noise signals to be amplified, to then be sent to the speakers... If the stereo's internal amplifier is off - no noise.

But to the OP - check/lube the drive shaft, check u joints and diff
You can eliminate the stereo because the stereo is original and the power is off.
Lub you drive/Prop Shaft and you will be good to go.

OP, let us know if you get that sound taken care of. I know how annoying those little sounds you can't pinpoint can be.

^ what he said. try the easy things first. make sure you didn't forget to lube any of the zerk fittings in the drivetrain.

I had what seemed to be the same noise. Same circumstances, noise was only present when I was on the gas. It was driving me crazy. Exchanged messages with Matt and Kakrot, looking to see if they had resolved the noise. I finally got fed up and went all MacGyver on it. Wrapped my phone in a few layers of tape, put 4 neodymium magnets on it and wrapped it a few more times. I set the phone to record and stuck it to the frame rail next to the front of the transmission and went for a short drive. I kept moving the phone and recording until I was able to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. Narrowed it down to the transfer case or double cardan. Drained and refilled the transfer case, tested it out, noise was still there. Lubed all of the drive shaft/ cardan zerks, no more noise!

Lubing the driveshaft and zerks stopped the noise for me.
