Whining noise from Tranny

I have a 98 sr5 and I have what started off as a small whining noise, much like a power steering pump, and I just put a lift and big wheels and tries on it so I figured yea not so unlikely the power steering pump would be whining so I drained it and replaced fluid with some Lucas p/s fixer fluid, still whining a little, so I borrow a mechanic's stethoscope from a mechanic friend, listened to the a/c compressor(no whine) listened to the power steering heard nothing, all of a sudden the noise got louder so I changed the trans fluid, helped a little, and three days ago the noise has became a real f'in thorn in my ear... it does it in park in drive in neutral and when I first accelerate...

anyone have this happen or have any ideas what i could do next?

Check your A/C Compressor bearing....

Sounds just like when the tranny is going.

That solved my issues.

And I had the same symptoms as you.

Worth a shot.

A clogged tranny filter can cause a whinning noise. Did you pull the pan when you changed the fluid? Toyota told me the filter should never need to be replaced, but you never know.

And Toyota also said we never need change our fuel filter, which is a crock of $#!^!!!!

Next time it comes around i will be draining my tanny, changing the filter, and then putting synthetic in.

I changed the oil in the tranny and got a new filter. It didn't match the old one. So, I went to a different auto parts store and and they had the same new filter. I called up a friend at a transmission place and he said there were 6 different filters made for my transmission and there is no way to know which one they used until to go in. So if you do the work yourself just a heads up on a possible problem. I have changed the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. I figured with towing, better to err on the side of caution.

Even if you took your transfer case number in they couldn't match it up?

IIRC there are different auto trans for teh 3rd gens through the years, depending on t-case set up and such.

I could be wrong...
(that or i could be thinking about how ford has 6 different auto trans in the f150 alone...)

get this crap, turns out it was my alternator after I touched the oil dipstick and it was vibrating like crazy, I took it off and needless to say it had a little catch in it, $240 later I fixed the noise, next day my contacts in my starter start going bad, it would start if you kinda worked with it, been that way for like a week now won't start all together, luckily tomorrow is the only day in like two weeks I've had the time to do anything, could be worse I guess coulda been a bad starter and God knows what that woulda cost me

I think that might be my issues,
I am guessing you had no symptoms what so ever of the alt going?

I have a whine in my engine bay that I thought was the power steering pump, replaced it and still the noise so I am thinking that is next.
But I don't have any dimming lights or anything so I don't know...

If the bearing was going in the alternator you would not have any dimming, it does not effect the output, until you lock it up!

add to the list of CRAP I screwed up... one of my rack & Pinion lines broke while I was trying to get me starter off... and p.s getting the starter off on these turds is a pain in the arse

Yeah they are a POS to get too

take starter off put new contacts in it, put starter back in and it wouldn't work, took it back off had it tested bought a new one, put it on blew a fuse went and bought a fuse, the Frunner was back alive, till an hour later I get in it to leave and I got nothing, took it back off had it tested it past, brand new starter mind you, tried taking off the exhaust manifold to get it out from the top instead of threading it through the bottom...YEA RIGHT!! it may as well be welded in!! put it back on checked EVERYTHING!!!! car starts, get to work try leaving a I got nothing, called cousin(dodge mechanic) tells me to beat on it, tada it starts, all this SHAT because I "got in the Zone" and they gave me the lemon starter.... UGH!!! anyone who has ever taken off a starter on these pieces has to feel my pain, it's like trying to do a Rubics cube while some one is shooting bottle rockets at you

Yeah Hitting it always works.
But you can't do that every time.

Just curious how old is your battery?

I notice my bat is bad and I will be replacing it down the road when I have the money.

But even the slightest drain from lets say my CB makes it so when I go to start the truck it is like the starter is dead.

Just a thought.

But yeah I don't want to even attempt trying to get to the start, I had enough of an issue getting my bumper off today...

Most Toyota automatic transmissions don't use a filter like everybody else they use a metal screen which can be cleaned out & reused, sometimes it's a permanent fixture in the pan.

yea I tested my battery, pushing 12.7 volts, it's not the problem, i basically just suck at life...

and 00t4rlimited is right about the filter to all the now believers, i work in the test labs for Fleetguard/Cummins Filtration all i do all day everyday is test lube and hydraulic filters and on these you really just have to take them out and clean em and pop them back in
