Whistle NOISE??? am I losing it, not really

hey guys,

when im driving, sometimes I hear a whistle noise, it could be from the wind that hits a certain part of the car, or some mechanical component, any ideas????

im not making this up.... it sounds ridiculous but it's there

Sorry can't sympathize as I don't have any whistling noises, other than the girls wolf whistling at my my truck and me :arrow:

Maybe the roof rack rails need to be adjusted. I've heard that they need to be at a certain spots to reduce wind noise? Maybe it's your hood scoop? I too have a SE, but no wind noises though the scoop was great for catching cicadas while driving...
 
Help with whistle

Your not imagining the whistle! I too have it, and it is driving me crazy. I am in the process of shifting my rack cross bars to see if that helps. I don't know where else it could be coming from. I do have a sun roof but I hear the whistling noise when it's closed. BTW I have an 04 limited. It seems to be worse on cool windy days when I am driving 50+ MPH.:( :mad: :confused:

moved cross bars

Well, I moved my crossbars to the recommended "dots" on the rails and still I get a whistling noise. Any suggestions because I'm
at my wits end. I have a $40k truck that seranades me when I drive on the highway. I really didn't want the whistling option!:mad:

I was telling my gf and she thought i was losing it...


Well she happened to be in the car... this noise is very distinctive, comes and goes.. like a cricket noise...at certain speeds...


so it's tires? how would tires make that much of a distinct noise? I dont think it's the rack...
 
I don't have a fix. But I sure would like someone to respond who has cured the whistling wind noise overhead!
 
Can it be the A/C?
Mine sometimes has the whistle noise when I have it on and let the outside fresh air in. The noise disapear when I set the A/C to recirculate.
 
Copper it's funny you mentioned that because I thought mine got quieter when I played with recirculate.
 
well in my experience from test driving before i got my 05 se, it seemed to have been the moon roof. i test drove 5 different 4runners and 4 of them had a moon roof and all 4 of those had that whistling noise past 50-55 mph even with the moon roof closed. my truck was the last one i tested and it doesnt have a moon roof...no noise either. good luck trying to get rid of that noise. i know its extremely irritating. i almost didnt get my truck because of that.
 
make sure the cross bars on the roof rack are facing the right way
arrows on them should be facing forward
 
It is weird, the noise actually started this morning. But once i go over 60 it dissapears, and when i decelrate down to zero again, it does show up. Only when i am accelerating to 55 or so.


Your right a 40 thousand dollar truck make a sound like my broken nose. Not feelin' that
 
I get it too, but then again, I have three antennas on top (ok, one on top and two on the hood)...that's what makes my whistle noise. anything with a type of coil (or spiral twisted wire) will also make more noise than a regular straight antenna...
 
Whistling

I just started noticing a high pitched whistling noise too. Although, mine is somehow related to my A/C.

I don't hear it from outside, probably due to engine noise, yet it's really distinct from inside the car. Even with the RECIRC on, it gets louder.

Is this something with the clutch, fan, etc. ? I'm about to take my 4R in for this and to check what TSB it's lacking before my warranty expires.

Anyone else have this dilemma?
 
Could also be your stock Dunflops. I had all kinds of whistles and high pitch whines when I traveled over certain road surfaces.

I changed tires and it is gone.
