I actually made the dealer dismount the tires and turn the letters in before I took delivery of my '06.
Actually, white lettered tires were not the "in" thing in the 80's and early 90's. They were big in the 70's though, along with whitewalls. If you think about it, white lettered tires have always been popular throughout the years for SUVs. It's a classically good look.

Some tires may not even give you the option. The last tires I put on my 97 T4R had one side blacked out & one side with white lettering. I asked the installer to put the blacked out side on the outside & he told me that he couldn't do it. He showed me the tire & sure enough, it was written on the sidewall (with the white lettering) "THIS SIDE OUT"
Given the choice, I would opt fo the black out look. Just make sure the tires you want give you that option.

I always thought that white letters looked to busy on the 4Runners. In genreral I think they look a bit unsophisticated on foreign SUVs. They just scream motown. I will admit that they do look good in some instances, but I just picture them on F150s and the like. I think that is why they are absent from the highend SUV and trucks. When did you last see a Range Rover, LC, LX, GX, Gwagen, Denali, Escalade, etc with white letters tires and not think they looked out of place. I will take the classy look of black any day.

Bring your truck to just tires or some tire place near you and tell them what you want. They will dismount all 4 tires and take them each off of the wheels and then reverse them and put them back on with the white lettering out. Best to do this when rotating and balancing when you already have them off.
Also I think the black out looks like some no-named tire brand. Especially on BFG's, they look "authentic" with the white out.

Haha what are you saving them for? A special occasion? Resale? Even if this is the case, a lot of tires on SUVs that go wheeling at all are a lot dirtier on the insides anyway because no one bothers to take the time to clean that because of how little you can get at before you have to scoot the truck up.

I think it depends on what you want your T4R to look like and what model you have.
On the SR5 and the SPORT models I like the look of white letters out.
On Limited editions I like blackwall out.
