Who has ground their calipers?

About 3 weeks ago I sold my Tacoma and got a 03 T4R Limited. Before I sold my Tacoma I stripped it back to stock, sold most of the stuff off and kept a few items that will be going on the 4R.

The good, I found out that my TT ULK coils will fit the 4R so I just need rear springs and shocks. The bad, apparently you cant fit 16" wheels on a Limited model 4R due to caliper clearance. So my 1500 worth of tires/wheels are now essentially useless.

Has anyone ground down their calipers, or switched them to a SR5 models? If so any problems or tips. I found one thread where a guy took off too much and blew out the casting which makes me a little worried about going that route.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You will need to physically check your brake size. Not all Limited's have the larger brakes. I know my 03 has the standard brakes, thus 16" wheels will fit. Certain limited's come with the larger sport edition brakes, those are the one's who can't fit the 16's. You should be able to measure the rotor, the standard brakes are 12.x" and the sport edition brakes are 13.x" (sorry can't recall exact numbers off the top of my head).

OK so I pulled a front wheel and checked the 16" wheels that i have. They fit but are pretty tight, not rubbing but pretty close to the wheel weights on the inside of the rim. I am assuming that since they fit that means I have the smaller rotors?

Hmmm...

I have a limited and had the larger rotors.. I hit them with a grinder but to fit my TRDs from my FJC but... I had to take soo much off, when I tested the brakes, I pushed through what was left on the calipers...

So I would recommend not grinding...

Sounds like you may have the larger calipers but your wheels are clearing...Mine were not they were touching.

My solution was to go buy aftermarket smaller rotors and calipers to what you might find on a 4runner without the towing package which I am guessing is the reason for the larger rotors. That was pretty low cost I think I paid under 300 for rotors, calipers and new brake pads..

This is only for the fronts by the way, as the rears all seem to fit just fine.

Kinda off topic, but its not the tow package. My 03 has the tow package and even the oem rear air bags and still the smaller rotors.

Maybe they started getting the larger calipers in the later 03s. Mine was built in late 02. Even though I have the v8 my tow cap is 5k so maybe when they bumped it to 7k they incorporated the larger breaks. I'm going to look at casting numbers today.
