I'm going to live with it.
My clear coat is gone on my hood and top of my fenders. Sure it doesn't look good but I don't want to go through the headache and expense of having a crappy job done. My truck is a 1996 and the paint everywhere else looks good. I can live with my "natural anti-glare" hood, and I'll use my money to keep it well maintained.

This is what I've pretty much settled on. I'd rather spend the money on upgrades to things that will improve the vehicle from a functional standpoint.

I'm still debating whether to have my hood and roof, hood only, or whole truck done. It's definitely gonna have to wait till my wife and i knock out some other financial goals, but the day may come when i feel ok spending more on restoration and mods than the truck is worth. My wife wants a $30,000 roadster when we get there, so a few grand on a paint job probably won't be a hard sell.

Did this affect your MPG any? I know that sounds dumb, but Ive read that because bedliner has "texture" it causes more resistance. Once again, I know it may seem trivial, but with gas costing near $4/gal...

I'm still rocking 25 mpg. Total weight is less than 20lbs but I haven't tested extensively. I have been meaning to get a scanguage.

I currently own two 3rd gens, a 97 5spd V6 w/elocker and a a 98 5spd V6 w/o locker.
As far as vehicle coatings go, I plasti-dipped the 98 on the right on my own. It took about 7-8 hrs, and cost about $350 I think for all the supplies. It was my first time doing a whole vehicle, so I wouldn't say it's perfect, but I like the way it looks a lot, and I get a lot of compliments on it. I've had it on for about 4 months now, and overall it has stayed on pretty good--It has peeled up in a few places, but that's from operator error from my inexperience using the product. If you were able to do it well on your first attempt, it would look better and last longer. Overall, I am happy with it. It seems like it will last awhile, especially if I repair the messed up areas.
I just bought the 97, and the previous owner had a Maaco paint job on it done about a year ago because he was having issues with the original clearcoat. He said he went for the upgraded paint package (I don't know the exact pricing, but he said it cost him about a grand). Honestly, I think it looks pretty good for that price. Yes, there are flaws such as minor dust contamination and places where the tape line wasn't laid out exactly correct, but overall it's pretty good and I'm happy to have it. It's been a year, and the vehicle has spent most of its time in the FL sun, and there is no fading or any signs that the paint is done. There is no clear coat on it, but it has stayed in really good shape. I don't know if the pic will do it any justice or not.
Either one of these could be a good option for a 3rd gen. If you plan on offroading a lot, personally, I would go with the plastidip--it looks awesome, you can make it whatever color you want, and its strong enough to stay on, but not permanent. If you plan on keeping her on pavement, the plastidip is still a great option, but the Maaco option may not be a bad choice. I don't know if I would have had the balls to trust Maaco myself, but it really does look pretty good, all the way to the point where I would be really upset if I scratched it at all.

Yes plasti dip will fall apart. The few cases where it lasts a while longer is when you paint over it with paint
Why don't you have just the hood and only roof repainted. Should be able to do that for < $750-$1000
Leave the rest factory and wax it often. I wax three times a year and my paint is going on 17 years now.
Because if you do that it won't match the rest

I see a lot of people questioning spending $2,000 on a vehicle only worth $5,000. I get that, but how much do you like your 3rd gen? I like the thing more than any other vehicle on the market at any price, so my 4Runner gets the open checkbook treatment, no justification needed. If you're not that into it or desire something different, then don't do it.

I think the questioning isn't that a $5000 vehicle isn't worth an expensive paint job, specifically, but rather that for the price of repainting your T4R, you can almost buy another one. Would you rather have 1 pretty 4Runner or 2 4Runners?

I'd rather have 1 mint 4runner than 2 crappy ones. Two trucks means twice the maintenance. As our trucks get older I can only afford to upkeep one using quality parts.
I plan on having my 4Runner for the rest of my life so I wouldn't go cheap on the paint job.
If we cared what it was worth, why would we spend thousands on wheels, tires, re-gearing, lockers, stainless steel exhausts, shocks, springs, steel bumpers, sliders, skid plates, roof racks, lighting & super charges?

Interesting thread. I've finally retired my 97 from DD duty. Unfortunately the paint is just thrashed, and I never realized how bad it was until I got a brand new car. I used to have a covered car port, but now it just sits outside under trees all day.
I've been trying to figure out what to do about it. I know I want it to look better every time I see a decently taken care of 3rd gen roll by, and I know once I figure out a course of action, I'll spend the $300 on a decent car cover too.
After reading this thread I think I might try a local body repair shop and get a quote for the worst parts (hood, the black paint above the bumper but below the hood, and the roof. If it's under $1k, I might do that and then take it to a detailer for a ceramic treatment that'll help it stand up to living outside a bit better.

Average price around here is a about $6,000....i paint my own vehicles (20+ years in the body and paint industry) so far i have a weekend in body work and prep (my 4r was my neighbor's farm truck so it got pretty beat up over the years), built a custom roof rack and building plate steel bumpers, but the most time i have is in the interior.
I did a full color change in and out so that adds a LOT of time (went from the tan/brown interior to black) using an honest 10 cans of vinyl/fabric and plastic paint to respray everything inside. The interior is taking 10 tomes longer than the outside did just because when you strip all the little parts and peices out there are so many of them!
