I did the [MENTION=117408]Oneluv13T4R[/MENTION] course, which involved a lot of butt clenching and hill climbs with various difficulties. :eyebrows: AKA I learned out on my first run haha. Never used 4WD in my life until then.

Joshua Tree - Berdoo Canyon
Wondering who's done the Berdoo Canyon trail out in Joshua Tree. I was out there last weekend coming down Geology Trail up to where Berdoo starts but in the actual canyons. Hate to say it but I turned around at this one point where there's a bit of a steep drop off. It's the first major obstacle on this trail. I made one attempt at it, got hung up a bit, then backed out. Next time I'm out there I want to come with proper sliders rather than the NFab steps I have. But the question is how much worse does it get further down the trail before the road drops out at the 10 interstate? I was just at the beginnings of it so probably had another 10 miles or so to go.

It was probably 2 years ago, but I did that trail back when I was stock. There definitely were a few spots that gave me the pucker factor or where I had to reassess my line, but I came out unscathed.

The wife and I just got back from doing the same trip. If we had someone else with us we would have definitely taken on bedroom. From the videos I have watched on youtube and from what I have read it is not too difficult a trail but we wanted to be safe in case conditions had changed.

I feel the truck would be able to handle it. I just haven't been offroading very long and definitely haven't done anything like that first obstacle. Of all the "pucker" spots, how would you compare that first one if you came in from the Joshua Tree side?

I've also gone through a number of Youtube videos. Some of them look pretty hardcore but I'm not sure if those were side trails or the main one. Most of the trail looks very mild, you're right. I did see a couple of spots on those videos that looked like they'd make for some great camping. Maybe when we return we'll start from the interstate 10 side.
I had my wife and daughter with me and no one else in another vehicle who might be able to help in case we got really hung up. Plus those step bars had me a bit worried too having read about them getting caught on crawls.

Anyone camp Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County before? From what I'm seeing on Youtube, it gets pretty busy during the summer season. Mind sharing any information / experience you may have had? The county site has no information.

paradise road is just south of lake cachuma and is dotted with campgrounds. fremont, paradise, los prietos, sage hill, upper oso... a few augusts ago we tried camping at a couple of them and all of their assigned sites were full, but some have overflow sites. basically just a big open area with tables and firepits sprinkled around. it was cheaper than the assigned sites and i actually liked it a little more. if cachuma fills up, give those a shot. we stayed at the paradise overflow and really liked it. good luck!

Just to be clear, the assigned sites will have information on the overflow sites? Lake Cachuma wouldn't be my first choice but I've no control for this particular trip.
We encountered a similar thing when we went to Joshua Tree with not being able to find sites within the park. We ended up on nearby BLM land. Though there weren't any facilities, we didn't feel crammed in with our neighbors within earshot. The closest "sites" people settled into were hundreds of yards away. I thoroughly enjoyed it! And it was free!

once you turn on to paradise road there is a little market off to the right that has info on the campsites. it's called paradise store. i think last time they may have even had a chalkboard sign indicating which grounds were full and which had space. they may know there about which places have overflow space, or you can just drive to each ground and ask the host. there are several campgrounds in that area, spaced about a mile apart. you can try calling them to make reservations, but i don't know if they take 'em.

I don't know where Valley Villiage is but I've been around the Lake Arrowhead / Big Bear area a few times. There are plenty of 2WD-friendly trails there. Cleghorn Rd (I15 to 138), Pilot Rock trail on the North side of Silverwood, Skyline Drive in Big Bear, and on and on. I've been keeping an eye on when the Forest Service will reopen the Rincon Shortcut just north of Azusa. I took my 2WD 05 Sport on that trail back in 06. If anyone hears that it opened up please drop me a PM.
