Cheers for Ontario mikestang!

Woo! Hey, any places to do a little driving around here? I do a lot of biking up in the hills, but all the trails I ride are blocked from vehicle traffic. I'm thinking there has to be something on the way up to Baldy...

I haven't done any off-roading up there, but I did see a couple of trails leaving the village and they were open during the snow, so I'd check it out at the visitor's center. Just head right up Mountain Avenue all the way to the village. I'm sure they'd have all the info and be sure to get a forestry pass when you go up there. They absolutely ticket and tow up there even if all you do is stop at the side of the road.

Just post up or pm if you want to join any of the trips that were previously mentioned. I think the Big Bear trip is full for next weekend, but there's no limit on numbers for several other trips eg Mammoth, Mojave, Seirras etc.

92 TFR @ Big Bear Lake

Hi. New forum member here. I just bought a 1992 TFR the other day. It is a gas guzzler compared to my 2001 front wheel drive Rav4 (almost half the mpg,) but for driving around Big Bear, drives down the mountain during storms and in winter at night (ice on the roads and no guard rails on the 38 the back way to the high desert,) I guess it won't be too bad on the gas money. I have the added benefit of being able to go on the forest service roads around Big Bear as well of course, plus trailoring a boat or jet skis if I get a boat or jet skis some day which I plan to.

The previous owner put in a stiffer rear spring and better shocks. I just bought 4 Goodyear Wrangler A/T SilentArmor tires yesterday, but sort of wimped out on the size, getting the 235's. They didn't have the 31's in stock, and I don't plan to do much agressive offroading - although if I ever meet up with any of you, I might end up resenting the 235's? By the way, the silentarmor wranglers are currently rated #1 by tire users at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surve...eed_rating=WR&speed_rating=YR&speed_rating=ZR . Followed closely by the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's. Both tires are designed for off and on road performance - the best of both worlds. If you go to the tirerack web site, once you find a tire to click on, there will be a hyperlink on the tire page - something like "compare this tire with similar tires" - when you click on that link, you get to see the ratings by the tirerack users. On the right it shows how many collective miles (from all the users rating the tires) have been reported on the tires - it seems like a great way to find out about tires from the horses' mouths. Since the SilentArmor is a new tire, there are many less miles reported than the Revo's. But I went for the SilentArmor's since they were rated higher for ice and deep snow and since I live in Big Bear. (Although with 235's I guess I'd be better off still if I had gone with the 31's for ice and deep snow?) SilentArmor's have Kevlar strands in them, replacing nylon. Whether this is a marketing gimmick or not remains to be seen, but they are rated #1 so far.

It would be fun to hook up with members who come to Big Bear. Although I may not be doing as hairy of offroading as others. I've done before the holcomb valley trail through the old gold mining country here. I have not done any other trails here. Way back when I horsed around a dirt road that follows and crosses in a few places the south fork of the santa ana river in barton flats, when I had a Toy 4x4 pickup.

The TFR is pretty awesome, even being 14 years old, other than the gas guzzling. If it keeps me and/or my family alive, it'll be worth it, along with some offroad adventuring and some boat trailering. (And maybe meeting a few new friends.) I'm 44, married with two young kids. Members with TFRs and kingergarten/first graders would be especially a good match to offroad with, taking the whole families.

Location - Big Bear...nice!

Was just up there last weekend with 9 other Toyota's. Camped at Grey's campgorund which is really nice - away from everyone else.

Hope to see ya on a trail soon. August 18th is my next run up that way.

Cheers
Mark

Sounds good if I'm in town that day, I think I am going to a wedding the following day in LA. Maybe I could follow you part of the way anyways, I don't have that much clearance with no lift and 235's.

My favorite campground is Serrano Campground which is right next to the lake on the north shore - you can reserve it online with http://www.reserveusa.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/nrrs/ca/serr/newindex.html - best sites are on the lower left (closer to the lake and the bike path.) Of course it is paved and is not isolated from other campers.

As a p.s., someone had mentioned Mammoth Lakes as a place they like to go. I am very familiar with Mammoth, having spent 6 summers there working in summer camps there when I was younger. I have a bunch of truck inner tubes - i'd say half dozen to a dozen, somewhere in that range. I have taken folks inner tubing on the owens river during the summer, at Benton's Crossing I believe it is called, from upstream down to just above benton's crossing. It's a blast. Done in the summer of course. And the cattle grazing land dirt road to get to the starting point is a fun roller coaster dirt road as well, you can go pretty fast on it. So that is another idea if I can hook up with some folks who are going to mammoth. Nearby the inner tubing spot are several hot springs. It's past the dump if you've ever been to the mammoth dump. Options for the inner tubing include beer and super soaker water guns.

I am in the Antelope Valley - all of my prior driving experience (pretty much) has been canyon runs in my WRX. Just got my truck and am looking forward to checking out the off road "action". Let me know and maybe we can set something up!

Sorry to everyone for not adding the new names to the list until now. Life just seems to be getting busier and busier. At my old job I was able to spend much more time on the forum. I miss being more active with the forum and with my 4runner.

127 So Cal members and counting.

DZ4X4TY: Your runner sounds very nicely modified. I'm going to keep my eyes pealed as I live right on the border of HB in FV.

I live in the Bay Area in North Cal but I also have home and a business in Arcadia in South Cal. that I go to once a month.

This thread is old I know but I have an 03 Sport V8 and I live in San Diego add me to the list.

I've seen flipjin quite a few times around town. Even before I owned my T4R I saw his a few times on the freeway. As soon as I saw a pic of his ride on here I knew I'd seen it before.
