Thinking I want to black mine out. I know its already painted, but curious of what the best process is. Cleaning, self etching, paint and clear?
Who painted their TRD skid plate?

I just put mine on last night and it's not painted, looks bead blasted or something like that. IMO, it does stick out like a sore thumb.. I'm just going to get a spray can of black enamel paint for metal and paint it, that way when it gets nicks and scratches, I'll just hit it again with the spray can, 5 minute fix.

When I cleaned mine to install the letters, paint came off, think it was just alcohol that I used, But it came off just the same. Has to be covered in something, because it does not oxidize.

It does look bead blasted but it is powder coated. I modded mine for KDSS and it flaked off, not very good if any prep before they powder coated it. The shop I went to was not impressed either.
I had mine and my full RCI aluminum skid plates powder coated gunmetal with a slight texture, to mellow the look, prevent oxidation, and aluminum to steel reactions. If they get scratched and gouged now no biggie since they are aluminum.
Aluminum
Bead blast, Chemical etch, then powder coat. All about the prep.
Steel I would add a zinc primer before powder coating.
I did think about bead blasting them all and doing a clear powder coat. I think that would be a great option as well.
Forgot to add price. I paid $150 for the TRD skid and all the RCI skids including the fuel tank skid.

Not sure it was yours that I have seen it not. What prep did you do?
just wiped it down and used Rust oleum spray on it, simple process and turned out great. Can always touch up if need from off roading but its mainly for looks
