Whoo! I got an 89 T4R!

i finally got an 89 4runner. this is my first toyota but not my first 4x4, and i have some questions.

i dont have a tailgate. whe whole thing is missing. when i had a jeep there were about 500 places to find a used parts and 200 companys that made body parts new. where can i find a tailgate?

also i have a hard brake pedal after 3/4 stroke of the pedal. how do i troubleshoot the brake booster?

also, how do i charge my a/c system? i cant fit any fitting on the compressor due to clearence.

and one last one. when stopped at idle in drive, my engine stutters and actually died once. when i put it in neutral no problems. any advice?

Best bet is to go used. The '89 year included both the 1st gen and 2nd gen design, though most were 1'st gen. The 1st gen has the removable hard top. If that's what you've got, tailgates from 1984-1989 will fit.

I'd start by checking to see if there's vacuum when you remove the hose.

The first thing you'll want to point out on any future post is if you've got the 22R (4 Cyl) or the 3VZE 3.slow (6 Cyl)...

On the 4 Cyl, it's at the top of the compressor, on the front passenger's side of the engine. I imagine it's the same for the V6.

Most of us are diehards on the manual trans, so hopefully someone can help. I'd check tranny fluid first, and maybe do a flush.

thanks! yeah its a first gen convertible. i am actually trying to track one of those tailgates down, so if you know anyone/anyplace that has one let me know. same situation for weather stripping and seals.

it is the 22re with the fittings on the compressor. i just cant fit anything on the low-side service port because of clearance.
 
Pick N Pull is a junk yard that you can just remove the parts off old vehicles yourself. We have quite a few around here and you can get cheap parts from them. Yeah I don't think its going to work then.

Lol a pick n pull is a normal junkyard for us spencer hehe :-)

And yeah I've been looking for a usable tailgate for almost a year and a half....my babys never been topless cuz I can't roll the rear window down or open the tailgate.

Found one in town but I don't know if the owner would appreciate coming out to his truck and not having a tailgate anymore.....or having a grey one in its place.(truck is white)

i found a tailgate today at the local pull a part. going back first thing tomorrw to pull it. thanks for the offers of shipping but if everything works out i will have a tailgate' front fenders and some small pieces tomorrow!!!

Agreed 100% it will prpbably be cheaper to ship them both to spencer, rather than ship one to him and another to me, seeing that he's comming to my Toyota meet in a month. I'm sure he would bring it with him. But yes if no rust or little rust I'm on this like white on rice. Let us know please
 
well sorry dudes, youre gonna have to fight, theres only one left.... Its black and he wants $100 for it. He says the window has trouble (binds). If your interested Ill go pick it up and strap it to a pallet for you. I'd guess 50 pounds to be safe.


He sold a white one a week ago!

My fistes are up ready to box.....lol does the window come with it? What's the condition of it( it has to be better than mine). Ill send you a pm.
