Who's sleeping 3+ in a RTT?

Considering picking up a Smittybilt Overland XL tent with 4WP Black Friday sale. Hard to pass up sub-$900 for a 4 person tent! The weight has me concerned, though. Family of four, my boys are 7 and 3 now. Planning to replace the factory rack with an aluminum full size replacement.

Figure 50# rack, 150# tent, plus 450# family of four, that makes for 650#. That seems like an awful lot of weight on the roof.

Anybody running a similar weight combo? Maybe a comparable CVT Mt Rainier or Tepui Autana XL? What rack are you using? Estimated total weight w/ occupants? How long? Any issues?

I'll Let you know soon! I picked up the Overlander XL back in October and had it delivered last week. My boys and I will do a trial run in the cold here this week. Luckily I bought from Autoanything and they have a 12 month price match. After assembling the few things you need to it does seem like the quality is "rushed" but in the same breath it its sturdy so far. I will be calling smittybilt because the mattress pad has a good size seam that is coming apart.

Forgot to mention. We did open it up and climb in and my wife, 12 year old, 9 year old and aussie dog all fit. Snug but fit.

I have a Tepui Kukenam Sky, I think made for 3 adults? We fit all four of us in it, though my 6yr old sleeps perpendicular on the end, with my 8yr old between us. It’s tight for sure, maybe just a year or two more before the kids get moved to the awning room downstairs. Weight has not been an issue at all, while my rack isn’t available any more it is probably most similar to a Baja or Gobi strength wise.

Family combined weight is around 400, rack isn’t too much, tent is like 135, all rough estimates. I’ve got close to 40 nights in my RTT over the last two years.The weight is nice when it gets windy!

We fit 4 in our Mt. Rainier Summit Series (Wife, 5yo and 2yo + me). It’s cozy but not too bad. Total family weight is approx 400 lbs. Tent weight is about 175lbs. Haven’t had any issues on our Frontrunner, which has a static load rating of 660lbs, but after speaking multiple times with both CVT and Frontrunner their static ratings are very conservative.

Edit: From all that I have researched the roof channels where the racks are mounted are designed to hold at least the weight of the 4Runner in case of rollover. As long as the rack feet are installed and lined up correctly the static weight ratings of the racks would fail before that area of the roof.

Ocala National Forest. We also recently camped in St. Augustine and on Amelia Island. In the near future i’d Like to head out to the panhandle and do Florida Caverns State Park. It’s sucks that it takes us about 5 hours to get anywhere worthwhile. Hopefully we’ll find time to get up to the Georgia and North Carolina Mountains soon as well.

No kidding. After growing up in Maryland and then living in the SF Bay Area, this area definitely does not fit our family’s lifestyle. Unfortunately my wife’s job is just too damn good right now. We’re hoping a couple more years here will set us up for the rest of our lives where we actually want to live.

We lived in the Carolinas for a few years and camped everywhere in N/S Carolina. Really miss it. Since our kid is old enough to enjoy the outdoors we are itching to get back to it. If you have any specific spots in Ocala you like please share. Planning on heading up after Xmas.

With a kid, we really enjoyed Juniper Springs and Alexander Springs. I have some pics in my thread of when we camped at Juniper Springs in July. Ocala is also one of the few places you can disperse camp anywhere if you are looking for the primitive camping experience.

I eventually want to go trailer and use CVT’s trade up program to get into this size. We still have a few years until the Denali would be necessary our Family.

My boys are requesting we sleep in it tonight. Although it will just be in our driveway, I will report back!

For rack I am just using Yakima bars and towers. Specifically the Timberline towers and their 50" Bars

Well it was a decent night to sleep outdoors in MN. Last night it was about 42. I had cold weather gear on and a cheap 0 degree sleeping from Amazon. Which by the way was a steal of a deal! I slept pretty good for being a light sleeper. My kids both got out at some point to use the bathroom and I didn't move. Mattress pad is sturdy enough for me (180lbs). Im 5'11 and it was perfect size. I would day if you are over 6 foot you will need to sleep the long way which may bring this thing to a 3 person only tent. So far for $879 I feel it is a steal.
