Who's the next president?

Everyone puts their family first. The difference is my entire reason for voting for someone isn't based solely on one factor of their presidency. It's a ridiculous way to vote where there are a million other pressing issues.

I simply reversed your logic on you. The truth hurts.

:D

I beg to differ...i vote for whoever will do the most (or the least damage) to my family and its well-being. Again, is that hard for you to understand?? Again, you generalize a lot!

Who are you to say what is important in a family or what is significant??!! I just don't get it...why don't you try and keep your opinion to yourself or to things pertaining to YOUR family instead of generalizing stuff onto other people.

No, I make less than 250k. I will get a tax cut from both McCain and Obama.

Wow, you make less than $250k, and you would not mind throwing $8000+ dollars out the window?? Again, you are a lot more generous than many people i know...including myself! :D

I just don't get your line of thinking...that should be my answer to your posts from now on. :bash:

I don't understand what you're saying. It's only if you make $250k and above you get the higher tax rate, I wouldn't be affected. I'm not throwing anything out the window.

I don't think you have a full grasp of the differing tax plans so I think that's why you're a bit confused.

Let me put the chart in front of your face and see if it helps. Republicans hate facts, I know. :)

The tax plans Obama McCain
$227,000 - a year - plus $23,000 more $15,000 less
$112,000 - $227,000 (15% of population) $2,300 less $3,200 less
$66,000 - $112,000 (20% of population) $1,290 less ($500 per worker tax credit for $0 to $150,000) $1,009 less
$38,000 - $66,000 (20% of population) $1,042 less $319 less
$19,000 - $38,000 (20% of population) $892 less $113 less
$0 - $19,000 (20% of population) $567 less $19 less
Tax breaks for all: College credit: $4,000 a year per student in college Double dependent credit: from $3,500 to $7,000
Impact of tax changes on federal budget: Returns $700 billion Costs $600 billion
Source: Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. Numbers are estimates and averages.

Also, here's something else to make you feel better. John McCain is going to tax your health benefits and tax your employer for paying them. This has never been done in the history of our country.

My final point: You'd be better served if you did a little more research.

Anyway, we're veering pretty far off the topic. Obama will win; handily.

And i do NOT think that you are understanding what i am trying to say! My family income may approach and exceed $250k mark...and thus, Obama's tax plan will affect me and my family...AND i do think that 3% is SIGNIFICANT for me.

The REASON why i said that you are willing to throw away $8000+ is because YOU said that $8000 is not a big deal for folks like me (and other hardworking Americans who approach this limit). AGAIN, what makes YOU think that $8000+ is chump change???? Is it significant to YOU?? I would assume, YES. Then, why would it not be significant to me??? You think that people who make more than $250,000/year likes to throw away money???? WTF?!

Am i really that hard to understand???

If you are NOT in the $250k bracket, then just keep YOUR OPINION to yourself and NOT assume how OTHER people feel about the Obama tax plan. Is that really hard to digest??!!

Thanks for the "chart," but i did see it before when it was first posted...so, thanks, but no thanks.

Instead of telling people to do more research, why don't you slow down and READ WHAT PEOPLE ARE WRITING and trying to TELL YOU. BTW, i have done plenty of research into MY FAMILY'S financial situation and which candidates would benefit. I am in the medical field...so, i can assure you that i have done AND experienced first hand our medical system.

STOP ASSUMING THINGS and start to listen to people!

Man, you get waaay too worked up about this stuff. I thought message boards were for sharing opinions? I mean, why do you come here?

If I don't make 250k I'm not allowed to have an opinion about a presidential candidates policy? That seems reasonable. ;):

I totally understand the points you're making about the government sticking to the enumerated powers and strict Constitutionalism. Frankly, when I was younger I thought the same thing but I came to realize we can't be competitive in the world economy if we were to adopt such a stance.

Actually, we would probably be more competitive -- and our taxes would be lower as well. Since when is 'freedom' something to which we should not aspire?

Besides - if it is time to change the US Constitution - then it should be done the proper way. Amend it; but don't just pass laws that basically ignore it. Our Founders wanted us to be able to change the Constitution, but realized the importance of how it should not be easy to do so.

It would literally push our society into the gutter. Plus there are things like women and blacks not being able to vote in the original versions that shows wisdom often comes with time. The important thing is the founders got the part right about government interference into citizens personal affairs.

Actually, the US Constitution probably doesn't mention women or blacks (specifically), but they would (and should be) included as full citizens if it were follwed as it was written. The "equal protection" clause and the 14th Amendments were necessary because more than a few people back then failed to practice all of what they preached.
:bash:

So I've become more of a liberal with civil libertarian thrown in. Don't touch my guns, don't bother me if I smoke a joint, don't listen to my phone calls, etc, etc. But, when I see people getting their entire lives screwed up our subpar medical system I get pissed.

You sound like a "left wing" libertarian-minded person - at least somewhat; much as I have more of a libertarian-right philosophy. Anyway, you cannot honestly want more government involvement in fixing one area - without having them screw up something else. For instance, if you give "them" full control over health care issues, don't be surprised when they come for your guns, confiscate your books or tell you what you can do with your own body or property.

The 'Bill of Rights' is a package deal, and cannot be taken cafeteria-style where you get to pick & choose which ones you like.

Still, though, I extend props to you and others here at T4R.org who try to stay abreast of the issues and form an honest opinion about things.
:bigok:

We've let the insurance companies and the medical system screw us as citizens for way too long. The government = the people we voted in. We need to snap the whip. If you think the government is a pile, do something about. Encourage your friends to learn the issues and vote.

+1 to that, sir!! Just don't be in a hurry to trade in one group of corrupt schmucks for another.

Palin is kinda crazy...gotta admit. :( Like i said, yeah, i am a Republican, but i am voting this year due to how my family and my core values are affected by the candidates.

Thank god some republicans get it. So many of the McCain supporters just seem stupid to me. Palin is just a joke I'm sorry. I wouldn't mind Obama or McCain becoming president, just as long as Palin doesn't become president I'm fine. Like it or not, neither Obama nor McCain are extremely liberal or conservative. They must appeal to as many voters as they can, thus they stay pretty moderate. It depends on the perspective I suppose, republicans will see Obama as an extreme liberal, etc.
I think what Thai said is exactly right. As long as you are voting for who fits your family best, there's no reason to argue. Everyone wants what is best for them. Human nature.

Guys, lets keep it civil here.

I just think this thread points out that people vote for a candidate for different reasons. And I don't mean issues here.

Like Thai (not trying to single you out, you just stated your basis for picking a candidate) said, he votes based on what he believes would be best for his family. I understand that reasoning, and while I don't agree with many of his political views, if I step back, and look at what he seems to be most concerned with, his family, his views are in line with that.

Personally, I just vote for different reasons. I like to think I vote based on what would be best for the country. I know many issues won't effect me directly, but I tend to think more liberal ideas about social programs are better for the country as a whole. Just my opinion.

Strangely though, McCain has "Country First" on his podiums these days, and I don't see how many of his policies put country first. I mean, he criticizes Obama for wanting to "spread the wealth around" where McCain would rather you keep more of it. To me, that doesn't seem like "Country First." I guess I don't really get what he is trying to say.... but I never thought his campaign was very logical to begin with.

But to answer the topic of the thread. Who is the next president?

Barack Obama

(Unless in the case of a tie, then Nancy Pelosi, and I doubt anyone wants that)

What's up with Palin? It seems she's running her own campaign and saying things that are contradictory to what McCain is saying.

I think she's already running for prez in 2012.

And I really don't like her comments on some parts of america are more american than others.

She's simply a whack job and I'm glad Colin Powell denounced her.

I think you're spot on. She knows this election isn't going to be won so she's trying to sound more "mavericky," you betcha doggone it. Unfortunately, even after the election ends, I don't think this is the last we'll hear from Sarah Palin.

I really wish she would head back to Alaska and stay up there. She'll be headed back just in time for winter the way things look. If she comes back and has to do all this on her own, she won't get past the primaries. She has been able to appeal to some, but friends of mine who are Republicans are scared that if McCain gets sick, she takes over and we're all screwed.

Dirty Sarah is riding shotgun with me on my way back to Anchorage. :rocker:

If that's all she was about, I'd be on board. Too bad she's running for VP though...

Careful, she might ban your books like she tried to do in the Wasilla local library.

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.
