Why are the BFG A/T's sooo much heavier than comparable tires?

ok so I'm looking at tires for my 08 limited. I'm either going to go with 265/65/18 or 255/70/18's. I was looking at the hankook dynapro ATM's as well as the bfg's. The Dynapro's are about 41 lbs vs. the 39 lb hankook ventus that I have on there now. The other tires in that size range are a little heavier but not much. The bfg's however are a whopping 55 lbs!! This would be equivalent to adding 640 lbs of sprung weight to the inside of the truck and would kill my gas mileage. I notice that all I can seem to find are load range E. Is this why they are so much heavier? Is there anywhere I can find a lighter version of the bfg?

When I was looking at Duratacs, the E load range were 9lbs heavier than the C load range per tire, this was for a 265/75/16 sizing. If the tires you're comparing to are all C load range, that would explain the difference right there. You would definitely feel the difference on your truck.

Because they're not comparable.

Judging by the weights you gave for the Dynapros and Hankooks, you're comparing Ps to LTs (Passenger, Light Truck). BFG KOs come in LT only. Even load C weight jumps to about 47lbs. Load D about 52. Load E 55.

Btw, LTs are not just an increased load version of P tires. They require more pressure to carry the same load.

I kinda thought that might be it. Sucks because I really like the bfg's. Guess I'll go with the Hankooks.

I think you will like them. So far I like mine. The BFGs are also more expensive.

BFG all terrains are tough tires and will take a lot of abuse off road. They are heavy but will take the abuse of rocks etc. If you are not going to go off road you may be better off with a different tire. I have BFG all terrains but I off road a lot in the desert, they have never let me down and when thet wear out I will replace with bfg all terrains again.

I also really like my Hankooks. They ride great and are wearing well. Haven't been off the beaten path but i think they will do well

Chiming in for the Dynapro ATMs...Really good tire.
