Why are the Rear Springs so Soft?

I put 30 cases of beer in the trunk and 10 in the back seat about 750lbs total + 100lbs of wine and the back was riding lower than the front. It looked silly.

What are people who tend to pack their 4r heavily doing? How much are airbags and how much weight can they support?

Cool thanks, do you need an on-board compressor or do you use a regular tire inflater at a gas station?

This may sound naive, but I just installed a single Alpine 10"
Type-R with a Kenwood 1000watt amp and it sounds great.

How much of a difference will two subs make?

I have the cheap, simple install. I installed two valves so I can level right to left if the need arises. You need to maintain 5psi or so to maintain bag shape. You can inflate to 30psi when loaded heavy. I carry a small, $10 Bell bicycle pump, works great. The volume of air is so low that with a few pumps it's right where I need it and the hand pump is quicker and easier than getting the compressor out. Obviously if there's commercial air avail I'll use that.

Spring rate is always a trade off. I think the springs and shock combo on my Sport Edition is perfect when it's not loaded up. I guess Toyota engineers figured that most 4Runners would spend more time without being loaded up rather than being loaded up a lot. If they increased the spring rates so that we have little or no sag, the vehicle would ride stiff when it is unloaded.

Blair and I could compress his rear springs with our feet, so I could only imagine how bad it looked with 750+ lbs on them.

Keep in mind that, including your own weight, you have in excess of 1/2 ton of payload in a midsize SUV. That doesn't sound like the springs are too soft, that actually sounds pretty impressive. The Tacoma with stiffer rear leaf springs and a lighter overall weight is only rated to pack 300 pounds more than that...

Air bags will help a lot, but realistically you are at the max as far as what a 4Runner is capable of. Any more weight and you can put undo strain on the suspension and drivetrain, and the brakes will not adequately stop you in an emergency.

Actually doing the Math including the 2 passengers including myself there was about 1450lbs of stuff in my car so I guess your right they did do pretty well.

Breaks were fine. It was a short trip anyway.

sled, what a pic! 4 wheel online has them for 03 & up , priced at 87.00 a kit + free shipping. thats not too bad! ive heard that on other vec. when filled all the way, with the addition of the bag spacer, ( gotta ask for them) you can gain a good in. in height too. but thats not what theyre made for.

i have loaded my t4r way be on the limit to a point the rear axle hitting the chassis or what ever that thing around the spring, and my rear shock are leaking now...... Dam X-reas

I'm gonna say more than likely that overloading the vehicle is not the reason for leaking X-REAS.

One should always know the capacities of their vehicle, and if you plan on towing or carrying more than a vehicle allows, you need something heavier. A full size truck or 3/4 ton Suburban, perhaps?

i already Leaned my lessen i have been using uncle 05 Toyota tundra 4x4 for the heavier loading 75,000 original shock& spring, the 06 i only had it since October 08 and only over loaded 9 time in a 2 mile Trip !!
