why "Check" Warning light in panel is on?

Good evening,

I have just bought a 2001 model of Hilux Surf 3.0 turbo Diesel Intercooler, suddently the warning light " CHECK" is most of time on.

Can someone explain to me what is the meaning of this ( sorry my instruction manual is all in japonese).

You have to plug a code reader into a connector under the steering wheel to see what code is causing the light. Most of time it means an O2 sensor is going out.

I live faraway from the capital of Angola, and no code reader is available.
Can you please tell me if this is major problem?
I am sorry for not understanding much about mechanics, but when you meant O2 ( was it oxigen??) sensor, if so is it easy to put that by a normal mechanic?
Because this is what we have here?

Yes O2 sensor is Oxygen sensor. But to tell you the truth I don't know about diesels so my advice may be incorrect on that one.

We have two Japan built Hilux in the family ('97 and '98) including one diesel, both purchased in another Portuguese-speaking country (Brazil). Neither is what is called OBDII and compatible with US-type code readers. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how you get the fault codes as I don't maintain those trucks. I just use them when I'm there. It may be the flashing-light type read out used in pre-obdII systems here that do not require a code reader.

Unfortunately, it may be hard to find much advice on your engine in this forum as there are no Toyota Diesels sold in the US in their showrooms, only imports and conversions. Further, US emissions requirements are different than everywhere else so the cars sold tend to be quite different. In the US, ALL cars after 1996 use the OBDII system, but that is certainly not true elsewhere in the world. Hopefully, one of our non-US members can help you out as far as reading those trouble codes.

Our diesel engine was built in Argentina so I doubt our manual would be much help, although it is in Portuguese. Plus, it is a few thousand miles away from me right now. Boa sorte!

For the rest of you, it's a link from a UK Hilux board with the reading technique and codes that I think might work for Paulo. All you need is a paper clip.
