Why do I rarely see 5th gen advertisements?

Ever since the 5th gen came out I've yet to see a single TV commercial or any other advertisements for the 4runner, why is this? Is it selling that good to where they don't need to spend money on advertising?

None of the dealerships in my area even had a vehicle that had what I wanted, and only one was willing to custom order it for me. I put money down and waited 10 weeks for it.

I don't think Toyota needs to spend money to advertise a vehicle that has more demand than production volume.

While I was an FJ owner I wondered the same thing. Ever seen an FJ ad other than a generic ad with the FJ in the background?

That's interesting, at the dealership that I bought my 4th gen from, they had over 10 5th gens just sitting in the lot. Half of them were leftovers from last year.

Every person I have spoken to about the new 5th gen has never seen one before, they don't even know what it looks like. Advertising might create new potential customers.

It would be cool if they did one where Toyota features all of their different models in one full ad...

...or one like that 1950's Chevy Truck commercial driving straight up the mountain of course would be sick too!

I've noticed that auto companies rarely advertise the unique models, and never advertise upgraded packages (i.e. you would never see an ad for a Trail edition, FJ, 4R, or otherwise).

I've noticed Subaru do the same thing. They hardly advertise the Impreza (in the US), and never advertise the WRX, let alone the STi.

Do they advertise Land Cruisers outside of the US? How about the Hilux Surf, or whatever the 4R is in AUS? Is it just the US where they don't think adverts will do anything, or do they just not want to advertise their SUV, they sure advertise the Highlander enough.

My guess is that, during tough economic times, most manufacturers do not advertise their high-end cars or cars that use lots of gas.

I have seen a few STi commercials here in Canada however I have never seen a 4Runner commercial. I did not even know the 5th gen existed until I started researching SUV's.

your sig says you have a Blizzard PEAL

Just seeing a 5th Gen in person, on the street, is enough to make any person with a soul and an eye for beauty immediately want one.

Why waste money on advertising?

If they featured it in ONE commercial, there would be riots at local Toyota dealers. They'd start selling them for over MSRP, and people would still empty their wallets and say, "screw it - you better earn a scholarship" to their kids. People wouldn't buy bread or milk anymore...just 4Runners. The grocery/food stores would deteriorate and crumble.

People would burn their old cars in the streets in celebration of getting a new 4Runner. Ironically, it would look like Detroit.

All of this would keep us - the informed who love the 4Runner - from being able to procure one.

Plus, it would be boring not to have the lingering glances from other (jealous) SUV owners.

Toyota is doing this to protect us!

You only spend money on advertising to generate demand, and then only if the margin allows for that expense.

T4r has the demand, there is no need to cut the margin by advertising.

There is also no need to advertise a unique product that there is little to no competition for. Advertising is supposed to convince you to buy "this not the other". What "other" is there to compare????

You never see Rolls Royce commercials, Mazzerati, or Bentley commercials either. You dont need to.

To an extent it's also a niche product - you're more likely to see an ad in an off-road publication than mainstream media. Back in November, inventory of 4Runners was sat at about 4 days worth of sales - you don't need advertising in that situation.

I think they were aggressive around football time with ads but have since dropped running them. The "you in" campaign.

My guess is that they know their markets. People who are going to go beyond an 'entry level' vehicle purchase are going to do their research, and will inevitably discover the 4runner on their own.

Or, they only really try to push the higher profit margin models and maybe the profit margin on the 4runner isn't that high....
