Why do my cup holders suck??

So on a slightly serious note, my wife and I just test drove the F150 and said the same thing, they did the same thing to the new Chevy Tahoe I had as a rental. Her '04 Expedition and my 12' 4R both have the removable inserts to hold nalgenes since we're always carrying a bottle of water. It totally sucks that all the new vehicles are going to this, we're trading the 4R for the F150 next year because I need a full size truck for dry camping the RV in the mountains. I'll have to figure out a solution to this or hopefully they change it in the 2016/17 model years lol. (wishful thinking).

I think you will find that f150s with flow through center consoles vs the bench have larger cup holders.

Ha I can't stomach the mileage hit of the 5.7. Already worse than the 4R. Even a 3.5 Ecoboost will get about the same as the 4R (17-19-22 which is lower than advertised, realistic expectations) and I can live with that for a full size truck. Plus wife has connections to get me A-plan pricing on a Ford, so I can get one decked out much nicer than even a Tundra 1794 edition for about the same price. I've always been a Toyota person growing up it's all we owned, but unless they come out with a diesel next year that gets comparable mileage the long term costs of a nearly 30% difference in fuel economy for most every day driving (15 vs 19 mpg) just won't justify sticking with a Tundra.

the 5.0 gets better real world fuel economy than the ecoboost. i beat the absolute shit out of this truck and it never gets less than 18.5mpg. set the cruise control at 70 and 20 is easy to get. i imagine if i lived in the flatlands 22-23mpg wouldn't be impossible cruising on the highway.
this is a '15 aluminum super crew 4x4 xlt with the 5.0
I took out the inserts on my first 1300mi week long trip which started with a day old Trail. I shoved them in the glove, which was not ideal. I think during the trip I put then under the front seats as we collected stuff to put in the glove.
All our water bottles are nalgene, while they don't drop in, they hold 'em in place, sorta. A bit tilty.
So where should I keep the inserts? I think they are in my garage now and I showed my wife that pop bottles fit in the door.
Last weekend I in threw out remaining junk from my 14yr old Ford I traded and found its holder inserts deep on a shelf. Also junked the Fords running stock boards which I had taken off when new.

my nalgenes fit like a glove in my 4Runner. it only has 2 cup holders vs this F150s 41.3
This reminds me. When my 4R was 2 days old at its first camp spot I set a freshly opened beer can on the arm rest of the rear passenger door when I went to the rear to unload an item I couldn't reach from the inside. Wife and kid were 40ft away setting up a fire. Kid runs over and shuts the door, resulting in beer dumping all over passenger seat and soaking into carpet too. I didn't say a word to kid as I didn't want to alarm wife who was already freaked out about messing up our new truck on a week long camp trip. She came over and wondered why I was so busy mopping up. Turn out she sent the kid over to shut the door as she 'didn't like it open' Yeah, it was ultimately my fault so no harsh word were said, but...

I might be able to hammer them into the holder for a press fit, but it would be unpleasant to get them out. Instead just the bottom 1" of the nalgene fits which is enough. Maybe there are small variations in bottles depending on vintage, our are all the old BPA infested ones.

that may be the case. i recycled all of my BPA ones as soon as the new ones came out. i don't think i owned my 4Runner when the BPA ones existed

My nalgene and the wife's fit easily in the 4R without the inserts. The inserts just float around the truck floor or center console. They're in there somewhere. I found some awful looking cup holder insert that makes it big enough to hold a nalgene for the F150 but it's hideous, probably just find a way to make it work when the time comes. Good to know about the 5.0 which by the way they make a whipple supercharger for! Unlike the 4R :behindsofa:
I'm a brain addled idiot with a false memory. (just a warning) It has been several weeks since my camp trip (the excuse)
The truth (just tested): The cup holder is slightly wider at top than bottom. The nalgenes fit 90% of the way in. They just don't go in the last 1". Yes they are still tippy because of this and yes I could hammer them in to make them hard to remove. There not going to go anywhere unless full during an emergency maneuver/stop.
So maybe not a totally false memory, but a distorted one.
