Why do people think the roll down back glass is the greatest thing since sliced bread

Sliced bread sucks but I do like that the window can go down for sure, even though I rarely use it. Nothing beats it when driving in the fall when the temperature is just right. Functionality wise, aside from getting stuff out of the back, I've used it once for loading long objects.

Every time I drive anywhere I have all 5 windows down (except on dirt, as noted in other posts). Love me some fresh air.

*note, with hairy bastards like these you can ONLY have the rear window down and not the other 4...

and extra people's kayaks

and loading stuff in the hatch when you have a bike rack on the hitch, or a trailer attached

and camping from the back

and accessing ceiling mounted long gun

Also I rip my bread off in chunks and dip the chunks in the blood of my foes!!!!!!

Groceries

... if the groceries shift & some are loose, I can roll down the window and get things straightened up ... unlike if I open the hatch & stuff falls out.

And, it reminds me of the station wagons we had when I was a kid.

Laminar airflow when you're going down the freeway at 70mph with the windows down while every other car creates a tornado on the inside.

Easily one of the best features about 4Runners. Wish my Tacoma had it as well. I appreciate that they incorporate it into the Tundra though too.

It beats the 72 Ford Torino station wagon I had in high school, which had a manual crank open window, but that wagon's tailgate was way cooler, as it could fold down or swing open, depending on how you wanted to do it.

I don't use mine too often but when I do i'm very grateful. It's awesome for airing out the interior of my truck.

One thing I do use it for religiously: when getting the fuel discount at Kroger, I put a couple of 5-gallon cans in the Runner and fill them. To keep the fumes from bothering me, I put the ventilation on fresh and crack the rear window an inch. Provides positive airflow from the dash vents through the vehicle, getting rid of the fumes. You'd never know there was gas inside the truck.

I roll it down whenever weather permits along with the sunroof and the front windows. It's one of the things i've always loved about 4runners and I hope they still have this on the 6th gens.

It also comes in handy as a passthrough for longer items. I initially wanted a Tacoma but have been impressed with the amount of stuff the 4runner can carry with the rear seats folded and/or rear window down.

I mean, It's kinda cool at first, a fun novelty more or less. Once you actually start using it, you realize that any amount of driving with it down turns the rear hatch into a vacuum cleaner, sucking in everything and you're cleaning your interior every other day. Heaven forbid you drive down a dry gravel road with it down, you'll look like powdered sugar dounutin 5 minutes. I learned that lesson in a 80's Bronco hunting truck.
Some folks think that it's the end all be all of a truck feature.

To be honest, the only use I've had for it so far has been to flush bugs out of the car haha. Roll the back down, open all the windows and those suckers will be out of the car in no time. Other than that, I keep it closed 99% of the time.

I use mine all the time when driving on the freeway. If you open the front 2 windows about 20% and the rear window about 20%, you create a stable ventilation from front to back which does not mess up your hair and feels amazing in the CA summer breeze.

Ever since I discovered I could do that in my 1st gen 4runner in college, I have wanted no other vehicle model except the 4runner. That and I dare you to try to fit a 20ft piece of steel in a car that does not have a roll down back window...

I realize it can be a safety issue, but I wish I could also put the hatch window up with just a button on the key fob and not have to use a key or the button on the dash.

Not too long ago I had lost my only copy of my key ('00 original key so the plastic finally degraded enough to break off my ring in a Walmart.. on a Saturday... and my only other copy with an ex-gf 300 miles away). While tearing through the cabin I pressed the window button on the remote and heard that taunting "beeeeep". I have a locksmith buddy but he couldn't make it out until the morning and it was supposed to storm all night.

I ended up reading the FSM to determine which wires I could jumper on the ignition switch harness to turn on the accessory power and roll that damn window back up.

But a simple remote "window up" function would have saved me the time and the strange looks...
