Why Do they call it a 4Runner

Today I was asked "how do you like your 4WD SUV?" And I said actually it's 2WD and I like it a lot. I was then asked why do they call your Vehicle a 4Runner if it's only a 2WD? So I took a guess and said to the person it could be that when the 4Runner was first introduced maybe 4WD was the only option and so the name 4Runner stuck when 2WD's became availiable.? Was this correct?

Not sure...but I find it funny that when you type '4-R-u-n-n-e-r'...if you press the shift key too early, you get '$runner'.

I thought it was funny...okay, call me crazy...I'm bored...

I think it is more a play on words... a "fore runner" is someone (or something) that scouts the way for others to follow. "Fore Runner" didn't really sound right or look right on the rig, so they made it into 4Runner.

The first ones were 4WD only (only as in there was no strictly 2wd model. You could still put them in 2H). Even though I have a nice new 07, I still miss the 86.

4Runner: Combine "4-wheel drive" and "off-road Runner ", and you have 4Runner, Toyota's fun-to-drive off-road vehicle.
