Why do threads get closed in the 5th gen section?

Just curious on the reasons why some threads get closed here. Not trying to be a smart ass... but I think it is worth a public discussion vs PM...

I can't rationalize why superchargers are a taboo subject. There is new information coming out that is legitimate..

If you don't like the subject, don't read it. Simple as that. I see no reason to close a thread that is not offensive or totally off topic. What am I missing?

I get threads getting moved for off topic.

I also understand closing threads when people start making personal attacks or when it basically turns into an argument between a few people ....

I just can't imagine someone thinking a thread on "white letters in our out" is all good here..., but anything about a supercharger being developed and installed on a 5th gen is inappropriate.

Look at how many pages the ARB Snorkel thread generated, and there's like maybe a dozen posts that are sincerely adding to or informative regarding the subject.

The problem with "don't like the thread, don't read it" is that it buries more informative threads by adding to the noise. And it's more and more threads our mods HAVE to follow up on.

Agree, there is no perfect solution! Being a mod is hard thankless work.. but just closing interesting topics, and allowing 1 million threads on 5100s, white letters in our out, will these tires fit...

It will never be perfect.... it is organic crowed sourced discussion. Which is what also makes it good and entertaining at times. 50 comments will be noise.. but one or two will be info you could never come up with on your own. Let it stay within the wide guardrails and all should be fine.

I think the guardrails should be: totally off topics and insults or personal attacks. Besides that... let it grow and gems will come out for those willing to look for them. Everyone's interests are different... so really hard to moderate and please all. Not saying I have all the answers... just think there is no harm in a Magnuson Supercharger thread (preliminary info).

What if there was a sticky thread about the superchargers? It's not really something that interests me but it seems there are plenty here that are interested to discuss it. Any new threads get nuked until they start selling them. Seems like a good compromise imo.

The issue with a stickied thread is that all we're doing is pinning a dumping ground for useless info. I feel the only threads that should be pinned are collected and curated information.

It's not helpful to people to say "go read this thread" if that thread is 99 percent crap but it's pinned.

Again I don't have a solution. And by god I never want to be a mod or have you guys suffer me as a mod.

I am new to the forum and can say a supercharger would interest me but from what I have seen on this forum, they have been testing them and they are going to be coming out soon since 2012. That's 5 years. I understand the mods closing the threads and saying if they are released they will open the original thread back up as it seems everyone is chasing the Great White Buffalo. As stupid as it sounds white letters on tires exist and for now (at least) superchargers are a great white buffalo.

Because the dude is on a bit of a power trip and runs things like he is the supreme leader. If HE thinks something is not worthy then lock away. Meanwhile he doesn't do crap about people constantly quoting picture heavy posts to simply reply with "cool."

While I agree there is a lot of useless info in the supercharger threads, it's not like all the other threads are packed with only the most useful info either. We certainly don't mind having 10 bilstein 5100 threads or all the "post x color 4runner" threads, what's it hurt having a thread or two about superchargers? It just gives a little more diversity. This forum has a lot of great members and a lot of great information, I've learned a lot since I found this forum. But don't see how supercharger threads are less valuable than "whitewall in or out" or the countless new threads on bfg ko2's vs xxx tire.

They voted no. I received no pleas to keep it open but I did receive a lot of pm's thanking me for closing a 50+ page rumor thread. Question: How many posts get 20+ "likes" around here? Not many unless it involves nudity. I asked for 20 "likes" for a post above mine thinking it wouldn't happen. It did and many of those 20 were question answerers, not question askers, so I closed discussion on the subject until there was real news.

It's been SEVEN years and there is a supercharger "right around the corner" and "coming soon" and "next week." Seven years. So a pic of a 4runner with their hood up on social media is supposed to be magical and newsworthy?

I try to keep this sub forum relevant, current and interesting for members of all levels of knowledge. Believe it or not I have help. Many members (old and new) send me pm's or report posts that are questionable. Sometimes I leave them despite calls for closing because the subject is interesting for some group, like newbies, who are being exposed to info that has not been brought up in awhile. Sometimes, like now, I close them because I know many members don't want to read yet another rumor vaporware thread. Other times, I pm some members that are here often and ask their advice on several issues related to the forum. Very seldom, unless it involves breaking the forum rules, do I act without consultation. Being a mod is not a good thing. What I do try to do though is keep this little section of the internet a good place for 4Runner enthusiasts.

Now, this is exactly what I would have told you in a pm or email if you chose that route, which is what most people do when they have a problem with me or question my actions. I hope this explains the reasoning behind why I do what I do. There is a lot of things that happen that you guys don't see.

Agree. What the hell does one more semi-relevant thread hurt. I mean: which tire, which lift, what color, which sliders, does it rub, do I need UCAs, what 5100 setting, yada yada .... now that gets OLD.

Greg, why not just stuff every SC thread into one until something relevant happens? I mean c'mon man - you posted bicycles in my "gone cars" thread. LOL. :smash:

There is no right or wrong and I sure as hell am not perfect. If you guys want something, all you need to do is ask. If enough people ask, I will open, close, ban, lock, move, merge or anything else that needs done. I cannot change screen names though....

Last point - I do not read every thread or post. This subforum has grown to a point that, at least for me, it is physically impossible to read them all. I am saying this because when I see a thread that shouldn't be here I move or close it. Some I just don't see though. Guys, if you think something should have an action, pm me and let me know.

As far as the supercharger threads, it is a no win.

The reason I brought it up publicly is because I think most people would agree with me, but I'm actually not sure. And I'm sure many people have the same question about why threads get closed. Maybe I'm totally off on how most people think...I've been wrong before.

I have had several people PM me asking... what is that moderator dudes problem... I'm not sure why they ask me... I just tell them to post their gripes or PM you directly. I get that it is impossible to please all... So maybe this thread will shed some light on what people want.

Crowed sourcing info from the internet is a double edge sword. You have the people who can only find fault and expect it as a "service" and never give anything back. You have those that just want to act big behind a keyboard and play tough guy when they don't have to face people in real life....You have those that just want to poke holes in things and think they are "smart". But finally, you have those that really want to share and learn. The later is all I care about and the only reason I come here.

I don't have a problem with threads on speculation. The old supercharger thread was too long and based on a bunch of misinformation from TRD.... which turned out to basically close their doors in terms of aftermarket performance products. Even that thread would have been fine if It would have not went so far off topic. Magnuson is a legit company that is not just some small time operation. I've worked with their kits in the past and they are very high quality OEM type stuff. I see no reason why it needs to be a taboo subject until a SKU and price is available. Just stating an opinion for myself that I think several others would agree with.

But thanks for reminding me of the vote to shut the thread down... I had forgot about that. At least that gives it more of a reason.. Still don't agree with it.... but it feels a bit more reasonable.

No matter what I do as a mod I will piss off someone. I also think people have a hard time separating my posts as a member and my posts as a mod. That's why I sign my mod posts -mod-. I will reopen the supercharger thread and have another vote to keep it open or closed. Thanks.
