Why does my 4runner use so much gas!

I Just got my truck on the road. While driving it to the gas station I had an eighth of a tank. When I got there (less than 3K) i had half that. I could watch the meter go down. :mad2: Is that normal when the meter gets low?

What can I do to fix this, I'm going to do a tune up, all the fluid is good but I want to do new spark plugs. Should this fix it or could it be something more?

You can't go by the fuel gauges in these trucks , they are not alway correct . Check your mpg in between fill ups and see if your gauge is right .
 
Okay makes sense cause no vehicle should do that unless you have a massive hole in your tank. I'll borrow my brothers scan gauge and see how she goes, today was my 1st fill up in it so hopefully it will be fine. A tune up is still in order for it, OEM Toyota plugs would be the best right?

Yeah, the fuel gauge isn't that precise. Go by how many miles you get per tank.
 
I run 285/75R16s and have added alot of weight...Schrockworks front bumper,CBI rerar bumper and swingout, 8K winch, full skids, sliders and other goodies. I fuel up at about 200 miles as I only seem to be getting 13 to 14 MPG. My gas tank is rock tested and does not hold 18 gals any more. LOL
 
I still :redbrick: have 265/70/16 on mine
stock in every way that would affect mpg. v6, 4wd, 160xxx miles
I can usually just grab the 300 mark before I have to pull in.

My truck is heavy. At 200 miles on the highway I look for gas stations. 5 gallon tank on the rear bumper doesn't hurt either .
 
If its auto, you'll get slightly less. Im running a 5spd stock as bones and I can also usually hit 300 miles before filling up, but im doing all highway 90% of the time with a bit of a lead foot.

On a side note, would it be a good idea to sticky a post or a poll with how many miles people are getting in their 4r?
 
Road Trip

Just did a 300 mile trip driving 70-75mph and stopped for gas when I hit 286mi and fuel light came on, still had 3 gallons left if my tank really holds 18. 19mpg
 
Their are many variables when trying to figure out gas mileage as previous members have shown. I know for myself, I just had new tires put on and they accidentally mounted LR E duratracs and my truck hated it. After fixing the problem by mounting some c LR duratracs I am now showing improvements in acceleration and just plain lower rpm's throughout all gears. The tire size was a 265/70/17, and the difference between the two was about 6 pounds per tire. Now that does not seem like much, but apparently it is. Saving that 6 pounds made a night and day difference.
 
I've got the V6 with an auto trans and I feel like my emergency light comes on waaaay to early...I typically only fill 14.5 gallons and the manual says it should be over 18. My worst range was about 250 miles (about 16 mpg) but typically on the freeway I get closer to 300 (20ish mpg).

The truck is stock other than some wiring, new brakes, a trans cooler and just an all around tuneup when I bought it.
