When its cold outside I let it warm up maybe a minute then drive away - the tranny stays in low gear for quite a while - and I'm uncomfortable with the engine revving away when its cold. Is this some kind of "design feature" that the tranny won't go into 2nd until it thinks its warmed up? Other than that no trans problems with 215k miles - have changed the fluid twice....

im thinking that the fluid is still so thick that it is not flowing or building enough pressure in the valve body to tell it to shift.
its been in the -20, 10 high range the past few days and my wife says things work better if you let the truck warm up for atleast 5 min. yes it uses fuel but i can say it is much easier on the truck.
its just like you stretching your muscles and slowly warming them up after you get out of bed in the morning.

Right - the user manual says so and so does the FSM. Just drive it, quickest way to warm any vehicle up.
