Why I do my own oil change.

True. Thinking about it, every time they have brought my car out at the dealership, they pull up and I walk over to the car. The person bringing the car out has never asked to see a receipt or verify in any way I am the owner of the vehicle. I bet if I approached any random car coming out and simply acted as if it were mine I could easily take it - so long as the rightful owner wasn't in the immediate vacinity. Hmmm...

Yup, I'm a valet manager here in downtown SD. I bet if you acted like it was your car, most of the jiffy lubes guys wouldn't even question it. Luckily, the valets have to verify with their claim tickets, so we know who's the rightful owner.

I agree. This is absolutely going to be covered by someone other than him (either his insurance or the lube place's) and it's easy to prove that they gave the car to the wrong person and are at fault.

The more common horror stories are from using wrong oil, forgetting to refill with oil, etc. that will cause permanent damage that may not be easily or readily detected until miles or months down the road. At that point it will be extremely difficult to prove who is at fault.

Sadly, as already mentioned, I do not think a dealership would be much better, worse even if they're a busy dealer. Best bet would be a small mom & pop locally owned business where they would remember you and follow through if you told them to not release the vehicle to anyone but you.

I've been in the car business my whole life, seen a handful of car disappear, often after pointing out to the management how easily a car could disappear. We've had 30 cars broken into in one night, easily over 50k of damages. I've seen vehicles towed in and stolen off the lot within hours, we never even know the vehicle was there, except for the tapes.

I could easily steal a car from the drive in lane at the dealer, security is almost non-existent.

I never leave my vehicles anywhere to have work done, I always wait on it and keep my eyes opened for when it's done, but mostly I do almost all of my own work.

Just changed my oil for the 3rd time, this time with theFumoto valve. Much much easier.

Friend of a friend took their Camry to a Quick Lube type place. They did not tighten the oil filter and the oil drain plug. The business had to pay for a complete engine rebuild.

I prefer the dealer (bigger pockets) and always avoid Fram products.

I’ve always gone to Valvoline for oil changes, here in town they have cameras in the bays where they are working and you can literally watch everything they’re doing. I’m going to tackle the oil change myself next time but I hear it’s a pain? Am I wrong?

it's not that hard, check out the 5th gen oil change thread with pics..I think that might be one of the most viewed threads on the site..the most time consuming part in the entire process is removing the skid plate. rest is gravy.

And I thought this was going to be about someone getting their oil changed and receiving a vehicle back with no oil in the engine.

I use the local Jiffy Lube for vehicle inspection only. Watching the activity there, it appears it might be hard for a thief to get away with what's reported in the OP.

Regardless of what you came for, you have to pay before your keys are returned to you.

I suppose a thief could pay for someone else's oil change while they're engulfed in the free popcorn and magazine selection, but how many would try that?

Well the way I look at it is either the dealership mechanics destroy your vehicle after doing a test drive or they give it to a thief. Either way it's a crap shoot.

I've had the first one happen to me. The second one won't happen because I refuse to let anyone work on my cars after that lol

Ya bad idea I had a Camry they stripped out the drain plug bolt it came out and ruined the engine
