Why I do not want a 5th gen

The current V6 has more torque than the old V8 and more horsepower than the old V6.

What do you mean by downgraded interior components? It seems really nice to me.

I think the mapping of the acceleration also plays a role in the 5th gen feeling slower. You really have to lay into the pedal to get going. It's not like that on the 4th gen V6 or V8.

As far as interior components, the tech is there which is nice, and the quality is fine (even good, by today's standards). But when you compare it to the 4th gen, the quality of the materials seems like a downgrade. They feel cheaper, more hollow, more plastic - in comparison (door trim, dash, seats, buttons, etc.).

All in all, I still really like the 5th gen, but it has it's flaws.

I have the same problem. Between the Antenna, spoiler, and short rails, trying to get a roof box to work is a PITA. I put Thule Bars on to raise things up a bit. Works for me, but I have a relatively average length roof box. The long boxes would not fit on the 5th gen. Besides that, we have been really happy with our 2012 limited. I think it is a high quality vehicle. Still feel that it is a bit underpowered. Think my next rig will be a GX460 or Land Cruiser.

Seems like you owned both 4G and 5G 4R.... if you were in the used car market today, would you spend $22k for a 4G Sport/Limited, or $29k for 5G Limited with comparable miles?

I have a Thule Force Alpine (I think), which is very long to hold skis. Thule bars would help, but that shouldn't be necessary with a factory rack, and I think they are overpriced and ugly. They are very strong though.

Also, the stock 5th gen bars are not high enough above the roof, so the latch mechanism hits the roof while installing or removing the box, which could scuff or scratch the roof. The latch is plastic coated, but it (or the roof) often gets dirty, so it could scratch. On my 4th gen the latch slightly hits the roof, but only just barely.

I have both , like both , really only thing I like better are the seats ! Ask LTDSC ! But I don't have a problem getting 5th rolling ! Lots of pluses/minuses shoot things I wish we had from 2nd gen a true tailgate was a plus ! Whatever floats the boat ! 4th gen problems with manifolds none on 5th fixable for sure but expensive go the header route so guys swore by their 3rd gens over 4th came out ! Perfect world 6th gen V8 now

You kinda just listed everything that Toyota realized they did wrong with the 4th gen and fixed with the 5th, namely during the refresh. There's a reason it's selling so damn well even after we thought the BOF SUV became a niche thing after 2009. We'll see how well it lasts. Right now I see 4th gens with holes all over the frames.

I have both. Wife has a 12 limited, I have an 03 V8. Personally, I would prefer a 4th gen V8 if miles are the same. I think I would get a 5th gen trail or limited over a 4th gen v6.

Really, you can't go wrong with either. Just find one with good service records, etc.

i like my 4.5 gen more than a 5.0 gen but not a 5.5 gen. But im not willing to put myself in debt for it. Ill keep my 4.5 gen an think about it in 7 or so years.:fro:

There's a local V8 Sport with 80k miles I'm going to check out this weekend (I suspect has its timing belt was not changed). Originally the timing belt maintenance on the V8 had me only looking at the V6, but I'll see how it compares to the V6's power.

5.5 gen seems so much different than 5.0 and 4.5; funny my wife is urging me to just get a new 5.5; difference between the two is ~20k. Not sure if it's worth it, considering these cars can go 300k+ miles and then some.

Nice, but..

I'm sure the 5th gen's are nice vehicles, but I could not be happier with with capabilities/ride/quality/value of my 4th gen, especially for the price. For me it's an occasional use vehicle for a second home, and every time I drive it I can't believe what a nice piece of equipment it is for the $10K that I paid for mine last year. 5th gen would have probably cost me twice the price.

Funny you should mention a GX. I recently test drove a new GX460 and really liked it. Although it was strange the amount of front drivetrain feel that made it to the steering wheel. No such vibrations in my 4th gen 4R or AWD RX.

The considerations I have about upgrading are: it's too nice to haul my big dog in the back seat, gas mileage, inferior approach angle and price.

After test driving, my wife likes the GX over the Land Cruiser (LC to big for her). So we'll probably replace our 12 with a GX.

I'll keep my 03 for a while unless it starts having issues (good so far knock on wood). At this point the planned replacement is a Tacoma, Tundra or 6th gen 4runner depending on what comes out. Or I may change my mind, sell the 03, and drive my wife's 12 4runner and let her have the GX.

I've had Tacomas and Tundras. I will say that the Tacoma has had the best resale of any cars I've owned, and never had any mechanical issues. My Tundra was great, just a bit harder to navigate in the city.

Until they put those blind spot mirrors in the 5th gen, I will gladly keep my 4th.
