Why is my gas mileage so low??

I just swapped out of my 2015 Xterra Pro-4x (stick shift) into a brand spanking new 2021 ORP. I absolutely LOVE IT! .... BUT....why am I only getting 10.2 miles per gallon?

I did an experiment, and for the last 10 days I've been driving like a sedated grandma on quaaludes, (the stinking "Eco" light never went off, not even for a nanosecond) and I'm still only getting 10.2 MPG!



The 4Runner is advertised as 16 MPG city / 19 MPG highway

Am I doing something wrong? What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Thx!

Are you driving in 4lo lol? I’d just call the dealership as that’s not normal. Maybe if you’re sitting at a lot of red lights or idling in traffic. You didn’t mention the type of driving.

That's towing mpg. Are you getting that number from the computer or from a fill up and calculating?

I would take it to service, that’s crazy low mileage. With my 2020 my long term mileage which includes some towing of a lawn trailer is almost 19mpg.

How many miles? New engines take a couple thousand miles to get broken in and hit max efficiency.

That is darn low though...

Agree with others. That's half of what I'm getting on my stock 2019 OR. Is yours still stock? How many miles have you driven, and are you calculating it yourself? Something isn't right.

When these engines are new, mpg are bad.
I have less than 2500 miles and mine are still about 16.
Take it in and have them check it out.

The “breaking in” theory is exaggerated. The difference in mpgs between a brand new motor and one with 10,000 miles is insignificant, especially compared to other factors.

OP:
Make sure your tires are inflated to at least the psi on the door jam.
Reset your MPG meter, your vehicle may have done a lot of idling while in transit or on the lot skewing your reading.
Take a test drive and report back.

Have you checked tire pressure? I'll bet they're low but maybe not low enough to set off the tpms.

I think you nailed it. Needs to reset the mpg meter. I got 23.9 mpg on my drive home from the dealer when I bought mine. I just went back in my photos and looked. I remember it being better than expected. Should be ready to get EPA numbers if it's all stock without much effort.

OP listen carefully for a grinding noise, esp when moving, could be dragging an anchor or something....

Seriously, that is weird.

Verify by manually monitoring milage and gas at the next fillup.

Or, disconnect battery for a few hours, resetting the ECU. Or both.

If problem persists, off to the dealer.

After resetting the MPG thing also calculate by hand. Use GPS miles if you have changed tire size at all. Mine is always about 1.5-2mpg off. But I'm not stock either.

Like others have said, reset the computer.

It may have sat idle for awhile at one point as a prospective buyer haggled over the markup or the dealership was exercising/ demonstrating the 4lo/ crawl features.

i get 13.6mpg, 34" tires, 4.88 gears and supercharged with tons of weight on premium gas..

I'm also thinking it's something simple like the dash meter needing reset. If there were something wrong causing this, you'd know without question.

I towed 2000 lbs from TX to CO with a lift, 33s and armor and I got 12.5 mpg.

Similar story to mine...
I finally got less than 20 on a road trip with some off-road.
FWIW I regularly see 15-17mpg in Winter, especially if it’s only short tripping around town

Crap! I didn’t notice that EPA estimate for 2021 is 16/19.

Check that your parking brake is not depressed. Also make sure the rear tires aren’t dragging too much from the parking brake by lifting the rear of the truck. A slight amount of drag is normal. If it’s difficult to turn the rear wheels by hand when elevated then that’s too much drag.

Just a thought.

No, you’re not alone! I can make it 12.8 mpg , on 33” , lift and blower , if I drive like I stole it. lol

Mine did that. First 200 miles or so. Now I'm at about 600 and it's where it should be. Call the dealer? Why? They will say "bring it in" and then keep it for a few hours, give it back to you and shrug their shoulders.
