Sorry for making so many threads to ask questions, but here on this thread will now be where i post my questions, that i might need some specific answers to.

The answers you give me will be VERY HELPFUL for ME, and for OTHERS, who have the same questions.

I will number all my questions, so if you ever have an answer, please put the number of the question your answering before you answer.

1. Stock wheels are 31 inches i believe. For a 2002 4runner sport, i heard you can go up to 33's without any rubbing. If i wanted 35's would i have to moddify my fenders?

2. Going from 31 - 33, or 31 - 35 inch tires, how much would your mpg go down from its regular average? If you were to give your best guess on each tire?

3. Upgrading from like, an all terrain tire, to a trail or mudding tire, does the mpg decrease at all?

4. Upgrading to a trail or mud type tire, or going from 31 to 35 inch tires, does the handling of the vehicle get worse, on everyday road driving?

5. Going anywhere above the stock tire size 31", do you ever need to get those devices (I forgot what they are called), that adjust your vehicles computer to work with bigger tires? At what size of tire would you recommend getting this? Or is it never needed?

6. Can you imitate wheel spacers, by getting new rims? What im asking is... Are there certain rims, where it lets the tire move more outwards away from the vehicle? So that would eliminate spending 400$+ on wheel spacers?

7.Do rims affect your Mpg at all?

8. What are some proven ways to increase your mileage at all? Ive seen cool air intake mods tested on youtube, and on some cars they decrease the Power.

9. I know this is a question that could be explained in a 5 page essay or more, but if i want something close to a 3" suspension lift, and a 1" Body lift. What would be recommended to swap out for bigger, or longer parts, such as the track bar? I dont want anything being warn down quickly or bending or braking because of my lift kit.

10. Does anyone have a good "Picture Diagram" of a 3rd gen 4runner's undercarraige with all the parts named, where it can show you what each part is called? A link, or picture would work perfect!

11. Is there a number in RIM sizes, that signifys the offset of the rim?

12. If i did get 33-35 inch wheels, what are the devices called that can help set my MPH to the correct speed that i am going with bigger wheels on?

18. Can you adjust the suspension lifts while your 4runner is sitting on its wheels, or do you have to take the strut out to adjust it, and then re-install it?

19. Do they make adjustable suspension lifts, for the front and rear suspension? And what is the range of difference you can adjust it? Say you put it on with a 3" Lift. How much lower or higher can you adjust it before it maxes out?

20. Why are these tires so expensive? They are Pitbul Rockers, which seem to be 300-400$.

21. Those and Nitto Mud grapplers are the most "manly" looking tires ive found. Are there any similar to these but cheaper? They both seem to be 300-400$.

22. What determines the price of a wheel? Is it just the brand? Does it get more expensive when they wheel size increases?

23. To have the sides/edges of my wheels be flush with the edges of my fender flares on a 2002 sport, could i get that look with a certain type of rims, or would i need Wheel spacers also?

24. Can Tires width make your tire look like its farther out past the fender flares?

25. Is there any danger or problems that might occur when lifting a vehicle, or using spacers, or big tires? Like things breaking, horrible mileage, rubbing.. etc?

28. Do you have to have a mechanic weld on a Muffler?

29. Would it be smart to install a whole new exhaust system when i install a Muffler? Or is exhaust system a waste of money?

30. After a long time probably like 50-150k Miles, dont you need to swap out your brakes for new ones? Or is it just the brake pads?

31. I was wondering, if i had to change out my brakes, if i could just upgrade to Tundra Brakes then, and it wouldn't cost much more right?

32. What is a front and rear Diff Drop?

33. Are both, or just 1 of them necessary when getting a lift?

34. So i really like roof racks, but mainly the designs that stay behind the sun roof. Like a YAKIMA MegaWarrior. Are there any roof racks like this that sit lower towards the surface of the vehicle? rather than on the cross bars?

35. Roofracks continued: Are there any similar to that roof rack that has a cheap way to be able to carry " Skis, Snowboards, Bikes, And general other luggage?

36. What would be a good price to pay for a 2002 4runner that is in good condition and 50-150,000 miles?

37. Has anyone found a "WHITE PLASTIC JERRY CAN" that i could fit on a roof rack? I plan on buying 2 of them that are 5 gallons each.

38. Would it be simple to have Jerry cans sit securely on my roof rack?

Some people say when you use the rust converter, your just spraying paint on top of rust and it eventually starts to come back..

42. Would it be smart to buy alot of auto upgrades, like lifts, new tail lights, roof racks, tires, rims on black friday, or do you not save like any money? Would it be best just to wait and look for deals over the months?

43. Do more expensive tires usually last longer?

44. Is it a good idea to try to convert an interior to another color like Black? Or a huge waste of time and money?

45. 2-din touch screen Stereo's that tilt when you start the vehicle, do they become broken or worn down overtime from pressing buttons on them since they are on a tilt?

46. Can someone explain to me the correct name, or what the lights consist of, or how they are made that are called something like " HID Retrofits"?

47. Would a 4runner with a 3" lift and some good sized tires be able to do some rock climbing trails like at Moab? Or is it easy to damage your vehicle like that?

48. If i bought weather-tech mats, Do they wear down easy? Ive had some rubber mats for about a year now, and just from stepping on them daily, some of the rubber has started to wear down or become altered from its original form

49. Do you guys have any mods or items you would 100% recommend for every 4runner to have?

50. I know oil changes arent that much, but can you save money doing those your self haha?

51. I plan on Buying a 2002 Black sport edition. Ive seen some for 4.5k, Would that mean they probaly have some big issues with them? Because ive seen others for about 6-8k. I would prefer to not have to pay alot extra to upgrade from my 98 to a 2002.

52. If i dont want my antenna to go up everytime i turn on the 4runner, can i just take it out of the back of the stereo to turn it off?

53. What tools are a great investment that maybe last long, maybe a whole life time that are very useful to help you work on and maintian your vehicles? It would be even better if they helped you around your house too!

55. When your vehicle is off and it is just sitting, If i have a usb port in the cigeratte lighter with an ipod plugged into it, or a amp, or any extra things plugged in, will it take power from that battery at all? Or is it created where the battery is only used when the vehicle is on?

57. If i increased my Wheel size's Does that mean i would have to buy a 5th spare tire also of the same size?

12) Speedometer calibrator. I haven't seen many options for 4runners.

13) 4 speed is an automatic, 5 speed is a manual. All other differences secondary.

15, 16) Anecdotally, I have heard members say the 5 speed manual makes it feel like you have more power, since you have more control over which gear is being used. I have also heard that you can expect around 1 mpg better, but your driving habits will make more of a difference than which transmission you use.

17) Coilover struts.

32, 33) A diff drop reduces the height difference between your front diff and your wheel hubs, which straightens and relieves stress on your CV joints. I've only heard of it being used on the front diff, and it only seems to matter at or above 3" of suspension (not body) lift.

36) Depends on your area. Check Craigslist and find out.

40) If you add enough lighting, you'll need to upgrade your alternator before your battery. The alternator provides power while your engine is running.

41) Any rust convertors I've seen recommends removing any rust scale, and as much rust in general first. Convertors are different than paint, and it will help ward off rust. But expect to do it regularly, and keep any road salt washed off your undercarriage.

33s may rub, 35s you will need to tub the fenders which probably isn't a good idea based on the questions you are asking. No offense meant by that.

2. Going from 31 - 33, or 31 - 35 inch tires, how much would your mpg go down from its regular average? If you were to give your best guess on each tire?

With 33s and a supercharger I average 16-17 mixed highway/city driving. 35s I wouldn't expect over 14-15 mixed.

Yes, especially if they are heavy tires (like Toyos).

They feel different and make more noise. Lifting it and adding mud tires is worse for everyday road driving than a stock 4runner on street tires...

Maybe for 35s if you are really worried about it.

Yes, google wheel backspacing and offset. 4 or 4.5" backspace is good for 33s

If they are heavier (steel) they might.

Put smaller tires on it and drive like a granny. 55 on the highway.

Read some build threads. Track bar, adjustable links, longer sway bar end links, etc. aren't always necessary, but they have a place. I'd say at a minimum get longer rear sway bar end links.

Not sure about sport editions specifically

It's better if you want to drive a manual

You can jack up the front end up and take the tires off, then adjust the coilovers while they are installed. At least for Toytec coilovers.

For the stock rear end there is no adjustability unless you get air bags, which are really meant for maintaining height when loaded down/towing. For the front...coilovers...which you already asked above...I had my Toytec coilovers set at 4" with more room to adjust, but it rode like shit. Don't go over 3" on the front.

Welcome to the land of big tires. Those are most likely overkill for you I would guess.

Don't buy a tire because it looks "manly". Big mud tires (especially 35s) are going to be expensive and won't last long on a daily driver.

More expensive with size, and certain brands are more expensive than others, just like with anything else you can buy.

Again, you asked this same basic question above. You can do it with different wheels alone.

Yes all of those can and probably will happen once you start altering the factory design. Will the breaks be catastrophic? Probably not, but once you lift it and whatnot, the vehicle will most likely require more attention than before

Dude...for real? Yes, that's the point of wax. Every six months is a good rule of thumb.

Yeah but I don't know why you would. Don't spray it on anything that isn't your frame or the sheet metal in the wheel well. Aka don't spray it on your brakes or something.

You need someone who can weld and preferably someone who has welded exhaust before. Or you can clamp them.

Smart how? You won't see any real benefits from it if that's what you're asking

Mine answers are in red, I skipped some of them but got up to 30. Dude, I'm not usually one to sit here and tell people what to do over the internet because I don't know you and you can do whatever you want. That being said, I'm not sure you need to get too deep into modifying your 4runner yet based on some of the questions you are asking.

It's good you are asking and want to learn, but I would suggest starting off slow and working into bigger things. You don't need 35s or even 33s to have fun in your 4runner. It all depends on what you want to do in your truck. Start off slow, throw a lift on it and learn how the suspension works. Find someone to help you who knows more than you so they can teach you and help problem solve. Put 32s or 33s on so the trimming is minimal and you don't start breaking shit that you don't know how to fix.

Also, start READING about all of these things you have questions on. Reading build threads and write-ups and looking at pictures will go a long way in expanding your knowledge of your truck.

Good luck, don't get discouraged. You will learn as you go, but don't bite off more than you can chew.

edit: as far as you asking about the supercharger, yes that is the only EASY way to get noticeable power since it is designed for this engine and bolts right on. The superchargers are reliable, but you have to be careful with used ones because yes, obviously they wear down just like anything else ever made anywhere in the history of forever. It is not inherently risky buying a vehicle with a supercharger on it, if it was well maintained.

Also, start READING about all of these things you have questions on. Reading build threads and write-ups and looking at pictures will go a long way in expanding your knowledge of your truck.

edit: as far as you asking about the supercharger, yes that is the only EASY way to get noticeable power since it is designed for this engine and bolts right on. The superchargers are reliable, but you have to be careful with used ones because yes, obviously they wear down just like anything else ever made anywhere in the history of forever. It is not inherently risky buying a vehicle with a supercharger on it, if it was well maintained.

I really am becomeing one of the biggest 4 runner enthusiest. Im just trying to get it right the first time, by that i mean... I dont wanna buy 4 tires, and a lift kit that is bad quality or doesnt fit my 4runner. And that goes with anything i want to buy for my 4runner. I seriously never grew up around fixing vehicles, so thats why i knew very little a month ago.

I plan to buy a 2002 black sport near 5-7k with 100k miles or less.
I will then want to put at least 10k+ into it. but that will probably take a year or 2, because ill be in college.

Once again thanks alot. These little questions could help me out alot in the long run!

These guys are right. You really should respect the knowledge on the forum and take the time to read through the build threads and write-ups that already exist. Based on the grade level of questions you're asking, I can tell you're not prepared for a build, but you can be with a little reading. Figure out which rigs you like best, and then make your own decision as to what you want for your own personal build.

The best thing you can do now is to try to find a local club, neighbors, friends, or coworkers who can show you LEGAL places to wheel, and give you guidance offroad. Find the limits of your truck and your driving abilities. From there, figure out what your truck needs that will allow you to take your wheeling to the next level, if you care to do so.


edit: My first paragraph sound a little harsh, didn't intend that. Just try to take everything one step at a time!

Only when you read the question I was asking. I can pull an interior apart. I wanted to know which LEDs people had success with, and which ones had minimal hot spots behind the cluster. A dude said, "yeah I used super bright brand" halfway through it. I read that post a week ago.

Jordan, out of curiosity, have you ever heard of Google?

You can find 99% of the answers you are looking for by using the search function at the top right of the page, or the search link in BrianSD_42's signature line.

The questions you ask have been answered about a dozen times, in probably a dozen different ways.

It's not my intention to pick on you, but a few things I noticed in your answers:

29" P225/75R15 tires were standard on Base and SR5 models. However, a popular option was the larger 31" P265/70R16 tires. This is why Base and SR5 models list the P225/75R15 tires as standard equipment, on the door jamb sticker.

4wd Limited models came standard with the 31" P265/70R16's.

The automatic transmission only started with the 2001 models. 1996-2000 had the availability of a manual transmission.

The exception being Limited model 4Runners, they have always been automatic transmission only.

Mufflers don't absolutely have to be welded in place, they can also be clamped. However, a good welding installation is preferable to clamping.

Some wheels do have the offset info on the backside of the wheel itself.
 
Alright I've read some crazy threads but man... If you took half the time it took you to type all of this up, to search in the search bar, you would learn so much so fast. I don't mean to be a dick but, this thread wouldn't be helpful to anyone who didn't already know how to use google...:rolleyes:

I know its annoying watching me put up a question list of 80+ questions. But its not because i don't know the answer to all these questions. Alot of them i already know the answer to.

Its just, some questions many people have widely different opinions, or thoughts on the topic. Having conversation and debating the choices is what i am really looking for.

You guys are very kind for helping me though! Ive learned so much about vehicles and specifically 4runners, just as i was taking a class for this at school haha.
