Why is my runner slipping and clicking?

I notice that when I go up a grade (20 degrees) at a low speed or from a stop I get the differential lock (little red/orange squiggley lines) flashing and my runner starts rolling back and I hear a really fast click click click like its trying to catch and it's slipping. WHY DOES IT DO THAT?

could be atrac, the traction control system that transfers power between wheels.

for example on the rear axle, if the right tire starts slipping, atrac will apply brake to transfer power to the other wheel.

Don't worry about, and when you hear it, just think "ahh, toyota genius".

If it happens when you roll back, thats the Hill Start Assist feature. It prevents you from rolling back.

I get it also, but it usually happens if I'm backing up, and dont come to a complete stop before putting it in drive. If I come to a complete stop it doesnt do it.

As was said, it's a feature you paid for, Hill Start Assist. Read about it in your owners manual.

if I keep rolling, its not assisting though, right?

It only holds for a second or two, not forever. It's meant to give you time to switch from the brake to the gas when starting on a steep grade.

Copy that, I guess that makes sense. I just thought it sounded bad enough so that I may have to worry.
