Why is V8 Full Time AWD?

Actually only the 03 models had 4 speed trannies. I own a 2004 Limited V8 and it is a 5 speed.

The person you quoted(from 2012) was referring to the V6, which indeed had the 4 speed transmission in 2003 AND 2004, but you are correct only in that the 2004 V8 does indeed have a 5 speed transmission (sealed version), as well as the 2003 V8 also has the 5 speed transmission, but it's not the sealed 5 speed version and uses the Toyota type IV fluid and not the Toyota WS fluid, that 5 speed transmission version has a dip stick.

I personally like the power being distributed between all 4 wheels instead of RWD. There is quite a bit of go behind the V8. Sure it would be nice to have the 2WD option, but the AWD has grown to be a luxury that I never knew id enjoy this much.

My V6 4WD is a tire spinning one-wheel peeler in 2WD with the traction and stability control turned off. With the extra torque and 200 more lbs. of iron block V8 hanging over the front wheels, the V8 4WD would be one helluva tire smoker if 2WD was selectable.

You can have selectable 2wd in a v8 for a whopping $500 bucks and couple of days of work with the FJ cruiser transfer case

I have been loving the 2wd life in my 03 v8 for a little while now.

All V8 models had 5-speeds.

03 and 04 V6's came with 4-speeds.

All the V8s in my area were garbage, plus the area is largely flat with little need for awd. A lot more V6s in my area, and the 2wd option was a nice thought to save a little on fuel. It really came down to finding only one decent 4runner in my area, and by area I mean within 4 hours of driving, and by decent I mean the body had minimal rust and everything worked with no accidents. That is after looking at 14 4runners over 3 weekends in my price range.

You mention the "body had minimal rust", for the most part the bodies on T4Rs usually have little rust with the exception of the rear hatch because of the sound deadening material that was stuck on over unprimed metal.

The question I have is did you look at the frame, which does have a issue with severe rust especially in the "rust belt" states?

I live in the rust belt and let me tell you, I have seen the famous frame rot. It was pretty much only on the years before the face lift. Mine is in great shape for the area. Only seen two in this great of shape. The rest were fairly rusted, and the early years were definitely rotting. One was arguably unsafe for the road imo. They all wanted top dollar for them too. Gross.
